Surviving Minnesota!

yeah kloppers I'm sure I saw Festal Canned pumpkin at my 'up north' grocery store. LOL. Maybe it is a change in the pumpkin breed though...as you've said and its canning is being done somewhere else....?

I have set my DVR for CMT's airing of Chicken People. It would be good to hear if Ed and Jerry are converts.

The buckeye hen I have has foaming of her eyes. Front corner of the eye. She is not outwardly sneezing, rattling or anything like that. It is colder of course than it had been. Should I just wipe her eyes and a bit of Vet rx to see if it will clear with that? Any thoughts? She is quite large and she is probably ready for her next purpose as Minnie says. But it's not high on my order of things to get to....as she's a mouser for me. IDK. Would like to give her a nice retirement. But if there's issues with her going into retired hen mode then ...IDK what to think. I might have to bump her up to the second purpose.

Foaming in the eyes is pretty common in Cornish when they get stressed by weather, I would say yes to the VetRX though. I use Thieve's oil spray on them when I see that on birds. Just don't get it in the eyes if you can help it.

The menards black friday ad was just leaked online (within the last day or so)... what a let down. so much cheap junk, nothing decent. I need a gun safe and they only have one 64 gun safe which the dearest wife of mine nixed. fair enough as i dont really need a 800+ pound monster to lug around

Oh good Minnie. I'm glad I posted this little issue this evening then. I was suspicious of something simple. I have both thieves and Vet Rx. I'll start with thieves first. Couple drops under the wings if she tucks under and some TLC on her face. ...And we certainly had a weather event that most likely stressed them all out. They didn't leave the coop for two days straight...Only to drink their water in the run. Then back up on the roost. Poor babies.

Here is a photo of the run today. Not the coziest in there right now. I want it better in there for them. Get all the snow out. That storm was not nice to my plastic either. Dang it.
I already need to do maintenance. I am considering Cluckies heavy duty clear panels...IDK. They are an investment but the plastic whipping and ripping. Almost worth the money...

You can see the layer of snow underneath the measley layer of hay I spread on top. Chickens are starting to stir it better though....

Maybe they will get it for me. I should just bring a fork down with me...now that I'm thinking it through. That's the right tool for the job.

And then the best thing about Pullets: WINTER EGGS!

These are Miss Kitty's pretty olive eggs. Almost an egg every day now. She started every other. But she's rolling now. And Dixie must sit in the nest with her in the morning as they are both there, here the last two mornings. A little cream egg, a little olive egg.

Okay I'm going to post this stew Recipe. DH is ranting and raving about it again. And I had two bowls and I want a third. It is so nummy.

PORK BUTTERNUT SQUASH STEW

1 Pork Butt or Shoulder Roast
2 TBSP Olive Oil
2 Cloves Garlic pressed
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp coriander
1 chopped onion
1 butternut squash peeled, seeded, cubed
4-5 cups chopped kale
45 ounces chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes
2 TBSP Tomato paste

When it's done I like a bit more salt added to my bowl. But boy it smells so good in the house and its very wholesome and lots of healthy stuff going on.

I just took the 2 Roos off the roost and put them in my car for a ride tomorrow morning and only have 10 hens in the coop. Wonder where I might buy 2 or 3 hens at this time of year.

My aunt is selling Rhode Island Reds that were hatched this spring... I have seen them and they look healthy and lay a lot!
