Surviving Minnesota!

We reached 60 today! WHOO HOO

I saw some sort of butterfly, small orange and black.

I did some clean up in the greenhouse and saw two slugs

smushed one and threw the other outside hoping the chickens would find it.
It was another successful day of free ranging.

Good Evening Chickeners . . . . Oh what a perfect day. I have been soooooo busy - kind of like you chickeners! Since I have decided that free ranging my flocks is not the best idea for me (chix doo all over the walk areas) I have been busy building additional run space. I put together a cute little coop that I must finish tomorrow and set it in its place - It will be a perfect brooder but for now Ruby and Regina get it til they have their feathers and Regina gives me some eggs. Reggie is catching on that the fenced in coop is good and is becoming alittle more daring when Copper is around. He still hides of course but not so ridiculously.

DH got the water running up in Aitkin. He has electricity and water on the lot now.

Out at the campfire with NDN last night. They have a dog that runs IF she is not held til they get to the chain to confine her. Well, she won't be running anymore. The additional emotional impact is that they have a 10 year old boy staying with them who is on suicidal watch. All knives have been removed and someone is with him 24 hours. He is a sweet heart and also autistic but where in the world do they come up with these ideas!? He let the dog out, a dog that he loves. Good therapy with that dog. Well of course he was screaming. But they told him that the dog often runs off and is gone sometimes up to a couple weeks and that she will come back. I wonder how they will deal with it when he starts looking for the dogs return. He is 10 and in second grade. Maybe it won't occur to him that the dog hasn't returned.

Sorry to hear that about your next door neighbor @lvie . He can have my dog as a replacement. A bonus for you is that he loves chicken crap. Can't keep him away from it. Your yard will always be nice and clean of chicken poo.

I lost one of my Leghorn pullets today. There's a hawk nest in a close tree. My guess is they're the culprit although owls have been an issue as of late, too. Any suggestions on how to deal with pesky hawks?

I bought my first ebay eggs today. We'll see how that adventure goes.

Potato gun into the nest. Maybe they will relocate.

Just shooting the nest not the hawk is what I meant. I think that is illegal as well. If you get caught.

I think, if you just think it might be illegal, it might not be illegal because you had no intent to be illegal but to just scare them......

And with my vast knowledge of the criminal justice system as demonstrated above. I have to admit, I might be looking at failure in my rehabilitation of my egg eating hens. I was getting 4-5 SS eggs a day, I was getting 3-4 PC eggs a day from the outdoor birds.

When I had decided to put the rehabilitated birds out in the pen, the number of eggs has dropped to one or two. I am not ready to lock them up again, but am thinking of notifying their probation officers. I am going to wait a few days and see if the extremely nice weather has maybe upset the hens laying cycles before taking further action.

I need advice. We are having a wild turkey problem. We had a tom who had been spending his days in the hayfield trying to scare Mr. T and it didn't bug me at all. But today the crack head was up in the yard fighting with Mr. T through the wire! We had to beat him off with a stick! What should we do? Season opens this coming weekend and we all get licenses so he better watch his butt. There was 20+ dust bathing on the driveway too! But along side the neighbors woods. Lots of big tins this year...
