Surviving Minnesota!

3 more days until my cochins hatch. I am honestly more excited for the next batch with the black cockerel over all the hens then this one!

Happy to have found a Minnesota thread! My husband and I are hoping to start a small backyard flock of 3-4 hens in Minneapolis this spring. Does anyone in the area have experience buying/adopting chicks or pullets from sources other than traditional hatcheries (small farms, rescues, etc.)? Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome!
I am in North Dakota so I don't know much about anything over there, hopefully a true MN person can help you

Oh my gosh, how exciting! Keep us posted!

Welcome Harriethens! There are people on this thread that sell, it all just depends on what you are looking for.

Thanks, Cluckies! We're looking for chicks or young pullets that are used to being handled by people. We're interested in egg layers (although uber-productivity isn't important to us; we're going to consider them pets and will take the eggs as a bonus). One of the breeds we're interested in is Buff Orpingtons, but we're open.

There is a chicken rescue in Minneapolis also. You could maybe check there to see if somebody surrendered young hen chickens but it's likely I suppose that the hens are spent and mainly roosters. Not sure.

@holm25 has buff Orpingtons. I am not sure if he is selling anything though

Welcome to the thread and to BYC..

You need to expand to include Speckled Sussex..... They are the worlds sweetest friendliest chicken. They become lappers without you even trying to make them one....

I would suggest a Foo-Foo like a Polish,..(Okay I can't do it),,forget the pollack! They are nutso.

@HarrietsHens I am going to recommend Buckeyes to you. They are a great docile breed and are good layers. PLUS they have a pea comb so no frostbite :D. I am not selling any Orps or even hatching any till I get a special customer some.

I think you need some of Ralphies Sussex too :D
