I like spring and fall too. It's a quiet time for both really.

Ralphie, there is a designated transporter and releaser of the birds. None of the owners were there at release. The driver calls back to report weather conditions & wind direction and speed. He then releases the birds and relates what the flock does on release. If they circle or head out immediately ?

The winner is the bird which travels at the fastest yards per minute, and with the varied distances the first bird to his home loft will likely not be the race winner. Much depends on wind speed and direction when the competition is as spread out as we are. Head wind, tail wind or cross wind can make a big difference. If all have a head wind it is tougher for the birds on the long end to win.

So.. got my birds today.. looks like some sort of production brown egglayer. Comets or some such. They are from a laying set up ie Big shed lots of birds Amish were worried that I would be a peta person. How they run their flock isn't my issue. They are healthy but regaining feathers from molt seems they were also worried I would be angry with how they were caught (grabbed by the leg) Mrs Yoder told me they have been having crazy animal people come out and harass them.

When I've got low numbers of eggs, I buy from the grocery store which I think gets it from an Amish fellow to the west of us. I think they probably treat their animals fairer than the big production set ups.

And isn't it too bad that the activists who want to help animals make it so the people getting rid of older birds don't want to do that. Ridiculous.

Had a track meet in Underwood today. I had a really good day, no personal records or state qualifying though. I got 1st in 300m hurdles, our 4×200 relay for 3rd we are about 3 seconds away from qualifying which can be made up in handoffs I almost waha sammed the team in 2nd place, 1st in the 100m hurdles and I haven't ran them in almost a year, and then 1st in High Jump almost broke the school record, I barely hit the pole was getting if the mat as fast as i could and the girl running the pole on the right side was standing right there so I didn't get off in time. I think she had a disability of some sort, and she was so sorry and I told her it was ok since obviously something like that could happen to anyone.

How is Judy doing Ralphie? How are you doing chickeners? I am doing fine. We, as a group of chickeners, need to catch up. Sure miss Klops and Coffee. ILL - Underwood, MN? which simple does not make sense to me because of the distance. So I am sure it is reasonable that it does not computer.



Lilymynx13 - I think my gold comets are the friendliest bird I have and they are steady layers. Brown eggs of course.

Good luck on the race ejb. That is interesting to me that it is measured by the fastest yards per minute. Are the birds bred accordingly? The faster/est bird than gets bred with another fast bird - does that make a difference? It may sound like a silly question however I never knew, or thought, or cared about chicken breeding until now either.

This afternoon I found my favorite sweetest hen ever, a 5 yo EE named Honey with the egg diarrhea

I put warm water in the laundry tub with some basic H and oregano oil and soaked her hind end and belly for awhile.
I cleaned her vent and pulled out a kind of hardened egg membrane, she seemed somewhat relieved right away. Then I douched her vent gently and put some coconut oil on it. I got her half way dried off and put her outside in the sun. She was drinking and eating good but still walking slowly. I placed her on the roost myself so I don't know if she would have gotten onto it alone.



Is it ok to say douche?

Ivie, the old adage of " breed the best with the best " also applies to racing pigeons. Speed is very important, but the ability to orient to home is an equalizer of sorts. The will to break from the flock and fly alone is also a factor. Complex situation with these birds !

I am happy we are looking at some nice days in a row, and that will result in progress on projects.

Ralphie, are you done hatching for the year, or do you still have some breeds that you are producing more of?
