I also love bird watching. Love all the pretty colors! We have lots of grosbeaks... Even had a Pine Grosbeak at the feeders yesterday. There was also an odd woodpecker the other day. All white with black wings and a red head. My siblings and grandpa saw it but I missed it...

Sounds like a Red Headed Woodpecker. Definitely not a Red-Bellied.

I am learning so much on wild birds from you guys!

The 2 orioles:

I was not even aware a orchard Oriole existed. I may have seen them and just thought they were all Baltimore Orioles.



Or a Pine Grosbeak in this area.

I have never seen one here, that I know of.

I was thinking of the yellow bellied Woodpecker when Holm described the woodpecker.

We have these, the downey, hairy and Pileated as regulars at our diner. They eat like crazy and never tip a penny, which makes us think they are residents of the Vast Wasteland of the North.


Inspection day, I should do last minute prep, instead I am typing and drinking coffee. the last week of rain means I am not ready at all... Oh well, I like being on probation, I guess.

That top one is definitely an Orchard Oriole. The first time I saw one of those, I thought it was a Baltimore with funky colors.

That bottom picture looks like the Red-bellied Woodpeckers we have here. If you look REAL close on the male, you can see a little bit of red on the belly. They frequent my feeders more in the winter than the summer.

I joined the party too late (or just plain missed the post) to know what you're being inspected for... Best of luck! I'm sure you'll do fine!

We only have the Baltimore Orioles here. But there is alot of them! There is a type of Warbler that looks like an Oriole too. We see them every once in awhile. but I cant remember what they are called...

We have Downy, Red Bellied and Pileated here. Along with some small ones...

It is my NPIP inspection today..


I just looked up the yellow bellied and red bellied woodpeckers they are nearly identical..

I used "whatBird" to figure out mine, so I could be wrong. The yellow on the yellow belly is almost unseeable it is so small a patch.


I am betting I have seen the Orcahrd too and assume it was a funky colored Baltimore...


I have trouble with a lot of the similar species. Like house finch and purple finch.

Right now I have a Indigo bunting eating, I like easy birds to ID like that.

If you're referring to the pic Ralphie posted as a yellow-bellied woodpecker, that's actually a red-bellied woodpecker. I googled it just because I was curious, and a yellow bellied looks more like a Downy with a little yellow on its belly.

 

[I Love Layers]

Decided to sleep in for the first time over summer break today. It rained this morning also. Yesterday I rode horse for a while and then my dad and I trimmed hooves. Both of the blue cochins are laying now so i may set some Cochin eggs along with some rare breed eggs. That's if I can keep the rare breed hens from escaping everything! Or if you're the SFH hen you tip over every food and water dish!
I also officially have the Cochins in conditioning coops, they've also been in them but I'd never been able to keep up on cleaning until school got out.
As for state track I'm 2nd in high jump and 7th in 300 hurdles for this weekend.
