Surviving Minnesota!

I will say that I've always wanted a Buff Orpie...because I do love the fluff and the color. But gosh Holm you got me rethinking.

Black Australorp is another I would get. If I was doing some middle ag where I wanted to do eggs as a business: Black Australorp. They are extremely thrifty on feed and they look like big crows on a field for aerial predators.

And Lvie you are as lovely as they come. Dish away about your day. I feel like I'm super boring. Good thing I have you chicken people .
Actually I think it's other social media if you are on it. Everybody at fancy cabins or lakes or dreamy destinations celebrating the fourth. Hard not to do comparisons. But you know when I'm on the lake or away I sometimes wonder if I will be back before dark...so I can take care of the chickens and shut them up securely in the coop. :lau Oh boy....
I have my comforts and routine. And I like it! :D

I've had both.... Orps weren't my thing. I like the body of the 'lorps, but whoo boy, is my pullet aggressive... She ain't staying on long if she doesn't change her attitude.

Agree with you. I hate not being able to check up on my flock. Whenever I'm away, that's all I think about, despite having a fantastic chicken-sitter.

I have good chicken sitters too but I think the older I get it is harder to get out of my element.

I found the BA I had in general did not like being held. She was sort of aloof. But I could put her between an aggressive hen and a newbie and she would not take crap from the aggressive and she would not start pecking the newbie. Very nice disposition. Maybe just individual bird quirks.

Sorry to hear about that Holm.. hope the testing goes well at least

It's been hot here for the last 3 days. It's supposed to be 90 degrees or more until about the 18. There are a few days where it goes down.

The Cochins are handling it pretty well. I do check them a lot though. I'm checking them constantly when I'm in the yard which is whenever I get out to about noon. And then every hour to every hour and a half after. I also do leave the windows open halfway, and the hatch on top cracked at night. During the day the windows are open depending on the breeze and the hatch is open. It stays pretty cool in here most days.
Speaking of cochins my favorite blue pullet finally started laying again, the one I took to fair. I've also added the 2 blue hens back into the breeding, the one has to small of a body for my liking, and the other doesn't have a very good cushion or leg and foot color but has a really nice Asiatic face and the build which the Frizzle and the other blue hen are lacking so that would be nice to add in. The chicks from the 2 hens will definently be kept seperate and bred differently according to what they need to be worked on.
This morning I was watering down the area around the coop, which I do every morning before letting the birds out, when a skunk runs past and goes under the coop. We shot a skunk about two weeks ago by the coop, and it's stunk really bad since. Usually the smell foesnt stay this long but I've figured out why now. So before I would even let the birds out I shot it. Which took a while because it kept going where I couldn't see it under the coop, and my sister's rabbits go under there sometimes so I didn't want to accidently shoot one. Finally shot it, 3 times just to make sure it was all the way dead, went and grabbed a pitch fork to move it out and instead of an adult skunk on the pitchfork it's a young one!! I look under and there's still an adult, thankfully dead. That could explain why it looked a lot larger under the coop.

Probably individual birds or even different hatchery lines... She's fine with other birds, it's people she goes after. Little brat.

The keets are gone to their new home, princess is a little sad but she still has Bitzy. The keets are so tiny! don't guineas get larger than chickens at full size or is it just feathers?

I have had a fan running in the coop for quite awhile then added one two days ago because of the heat. Last night/morning I went out at 330 am to turn the one just inside the door off because a storm was forecast so I didn't want it getting wet if the rain came in sideways. The lightning show was awesome, but I don't think we got much rain here.

Holm sorry you lost your roo :(
