Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie... Sorry but I don't want more Polish! Shipped mine up from top breeders in VA and NC and paid dearly. Cute yes... Yeah well MN winters took care of a good majority of them, especially on the frizzled ones where crest falls forward into the water. They lay sporadically and chick mortality is high. They aren't very intelligent, spaz over everything, and drop over dead super easy. I have enough futzy birds...

The Following is the biggest understatement on BYC to date:

"They aren't very intelligent, spaz over everything, and drop over dead super easy."

They must have been related to mine. I think I have 4-5 teens is all... They are a worthless bird..I know, EJB, you tried to tell me but I refused to listen to your 98 years of experience...

The City people love them but they die for them too. I got a text last night from someone that bought some in May. 3 died, 2 from a hawk. They wanted more.

They asked the price, I being generous and just wanting them gone, said around 10 bucks. The came back with "How about 5"...

I must be getting cranky, I replied, I will eat them for that....and the price is now 25...

I really hate CL people....

Dang boy you are way too cheap... Day old chicks on those are usually $4 something each from the hatcheries and then you have money spent to grow them out. I learned my lesson. I had 21 adult birds shipped up here. You can usually fit a pair in a box for about $55-60, so you can kind of figure how much I blew on shipping alone. If I calculated what I spent on those birds, between the silkies I sent the people down there and everything else, those birds were roughly $100 each. Then of course I needed an outcross because I only had females on the buff laced. Ordered eggs from another gal... $205 and I got 2 cockerels to hatch was all. Everyone wants the frizzled ones of course, but no one wants to pay more than hatchery prices.

Speaking of bird sales... I had all the pet quality faverolles listed really cheap. A gal messaged me sunday that she definitely wanted a pair, but she wanted me to deliver to New Ulm at least. Not happening....told her to come pick out a pair and what days I had off. Tuesday morning she still hadn't scheduled anything and another guy wanted them. So I left her a note if I was supposed to hold or what... No response, the guy bought all of them that same night. Finally last night she messages me that she wants to come over. Sorry they are gone now... At least schedule something if you claim them?????

I had someone come whining that $5 for a 10 month old pullet was too much & wanted a lower price. No way.

Seriously......everyone's prices are ridiculously cheap. Considering Feed costs, and few upgrades to water dishes/coop every once in a while. People now a days are such whiners....
Agreed... Ralphie especially doesn't even charge half what his birds are worth.

In town for a chiropractor appointment . So after lunch I was ready to step into the shower . I see this guy checking out the project . So I start to dress to go out . He looked it over and left before I could get clothes on . Now I think I should have stepped out as I was . The shock might have cured his curiosity . :lau Probably one of those lesser Scandinavians that Ralphie talks about . Hey I just thought about last years 5 mile hike for mushrooms . Ralphie and I are not up to that this year . Geese left the lake a couple of days ago . No longer flightless I guess .

My parents usually try to minimize what we buy, with the 3 of us plus the 2 foster kids. Thankfully the one foster kid is in preschool and you just pay $20 for all their supplies for echool and it is offered by the school. Our school has a family activity payment where if your kids alltogether do more then 3 activities there is a set price that is cheaper then paying for each acticity individually. The clothes was not to bad until I started growing a lot, because I usually grow out of pants every 6 months. And finding pants for a girl who is 5' 10" and skinny is very hard, usually I have to buy shorter pants and use them for capris. Last year I grew out of them by about 2 inches after about January and we could not go buy anymore so I had to wear pants that are to short to school which sucked because the bus is so gosh darn cold. Usually for the clothes we go to Playdo's Closet or the Thrift Store, both second hand, or it would get way to expensive just buying 2 pair of pants for each of us older 3

$3.40 for lunches here so my younger sister and I pack, because I am sorry for what lunch is at my school it is not worth that. There was usually one day a week last year where we would have the most pathetic lunches, one of the most common was we would have a small tortilla with some soggy chicken in it and then some kind of beans on the side. I know there are health codes but seriously
I hear ya kid! I'm a school cook and have been for years. Unfortunately it is an underpaid underappreciated job and too many people get hired to cook that just don't care how the food tastes or looks. On top of that they slap so many regulations on us and we have to follow the recipes we are given and use the food they ship us and some of it is just not good to begin with.
Then we are constantly being badgered about our food cost being too high so we have to be carefull that we are ONLY serving the amount of food we are supposed to. . and the portions are small.
My own kids used to pack their lunch most days cause even I am not paying 3.50 a plate every day for them to throw it in the garbage!

I hope to be up to it in a month, but right now 5 miles is about 4.5 more than I can do...

No mushrooms growing in my chanterelle spot. The ground is dry and clay hard. I checked day before yesterday. Low year for mushrooms this year??? Probably. No mosquitos either. The dunks are working but the mosquito doesn't like a drought.

The school business and prices do make me feel like I'm paying the ride for a population that does not pay their own way. Sports are double the cost than the neighboring school for us. I may or may not have told them my suspicions.
