Surviving Minnesota!

On breaking broody hens . Moving them to a pen with no nest sometimes works . If you have a spare rooster pen put em in there . 3 days is usually enough in there .

Well the 50mph winds decided to take a break today so I guess that means I dig up Dahlias. The good part is that since I'll be out in the yard I'll let the chickens out, they're ready to peck me to death when I go in the coop and don't let them out.

They were out for a bit the other day but hid in the garden in a hole away from the wind. Then we had them out for our "family" photos (I'll post the results when my husband gets around to photoshopping them all into one decent composite). Both times they readily followed me back to the coop.

Haven't seen the fox since the hubs shot "at" it (he still claims he got it). Curious to see what happens when the corn is out around us. Dead fox in the field? In any case I'm only letting the chicks out supervised. I should grab a holster and carry my .22 (or my 45s but that seems overkill).

I have always said a light on the bird to shift her hormones back to egg laying but an old timer Bruce something or other said ‘don’t do that!’ I can’t remember why. I think just needing photo hours reduced for good health. I respect the man but anyways— and no nesting materials yes. Horrible to clean every day but that’s the way it is with Broodies .

The leaves are missing here too. The last few days of wind piled them into long windrows. My fence around the new grass (chicken protection) has leaves 2 ft deep around it.

Oh man how easy to rake into the run! Lol. Envious of that. My leaves after the wind have vortexed into the woods already!

You don't deserve good things.
Meanie.

Fake Eileen, have you ever been to the north even?

North being defined as some place where it snows and you can drive on the lakes 4 months a year?
Who the he double hockey sticks would want to go somewhere that cold?

Farthest North I've ever been was Ohio and those people were rude. . I'm used to southern hospitality. I couldn't wait to get home.

Shhh don't tell Janet . I sometimes get creative to use food that she avoids using . My home grown or home made . So yesterday I slipped in a quart of home canned chicken broth and a pint of home canned squash into the chili . Added some home canned tomato paste and beef better than bouillon paste to cover the flavor . Very good chili .

Great day for a pot of chili . Got it simmering now . I took over cooking today . I do it a little different than DW . Still tastes the same . I do not tell her everything that went in .
yummy! bear? deer? what? lol

Not all my Birds will be trimmed and have finishing touches on them. I call those my "Jerry Finishing"...If he can win by just grabbing a bird I can too!:lau
i dont do anything to my birds except take 'em out of the coop and throw them in a cage
