Surviving Minnesota!

The male with his head up looks like he almost had a rose comb? Does it just travel to far back on the head? I think the males look good!

What is the Barred bird? A Dom?
I am unsure if it is a bad rose comb or a bad cushion comb. It does not have a peak on the back but it is lumpy on the sides and rear & wattle size is indicative of rose. Mike says he's trash but I like him anyway.

I know the females are terrible, lol, my best pullet (one that actually had pencilling) had to be euthanized a few months back.

Yes, the barred bird is a Dominique cockerel. He still needs to grow a tail.

OMG, yes, I knew I knew the word, but I'm rusty on chicken terms and it escaped me!

There are so many breeds I want, but I can hardly handle one where I am, so I have to be very patient right now... it is NOT easy!
Ha! I hear you. There's so many beautiful birds and so few $$...

Where did you acquire these birds?

Hmarg if your Buckeyes wimp out I will be surprised. They are the most winter hardy breed I have ever had. I never was going to get them until Minnie convinced me to get them over the New Hampshire. And can I say I am SO happy I did. They are still my favorite breed out of the seven breeds we have here. They are thundering giants!

I think the hatchery ones are just on the wimpy side. They seem to be getting a little more size on them now. Maybe the Wyandottes just make them small? I do like them though, they are a hoot to watch. They see me coming and herd around my feet. Once you get used to being mobbed, they can be quite endearing haha

How old are your Bucks and wyandottes?

My Buckeyes came from Meyer hatchery, and I got my Wyandotte's from a lady in WI near Eau Claire I think. She doesn't breed anymore, but her starter stock came from Foley's flock, and were birds she bred from them. They are very big chickens.

While a smooth cushion comb is preferred, they seldom occur, they all have some minor ridges. I have some that have very small bumps on the outside edge like a rose comb. As long as they are not huge and pointed I do not worry about them.

I think it was Jerry that told me Cushion combs are derived from rose combs. I could be wrong on who told me. if it is correct it was Jerry. Jerry is seldom if ever wrong on genetics and birds.....ALWAYs listen to Jerry over anyone else, me included....

Cushion comb is PPRR, if I remember right... pure cushion, anyway. These aren't small bumps or ridges, I wouldn't be concerned about those. It's more like a bunch of squashed spikes.
