@R2elk this is my version of your waterer... So far it's worked good but we haven't had any issues with frozen waterers for awhile... But we are going to hit -7 next week so we will see how much ice we get...

I have to go "out" for a while.....I have decided to NOT wear my fancy cowboy boots today...
I shall be traveling in Sorrels.... 23 degrees and a windchill of -173f....a tad chilly..
The chickens laughed at me when I opened the doors and told them to go outside...
These are not a good choice for winter waterers IMHO they freeze too easy... and then you have to thaw them out... I prefer the rubber tubs...I am thinking of getting these waterers next year. But I need to insualate the other walls so it doesn't freeze
