From Murray McMurray:
-4 straight run Buff Brahmas
-3 female Red Star
-3 female Black Star
-5 Straight run Red Rangers
-1 free rare/exotic surprise chick

From Hoover’s Hatchery:
-15 Straight run Husky Reds
-4 ISA Browns

I surprisingly got the boyfriend to be okay with egg layers other than the ISAs, so we got a few to experiment with now and see how we like them for when we order again next year.

I’m excited to figure out what the rare chick may be, maybe I’ll be able to claim it’s lonely and buy some more chicks of that breed over the summer.

I got a LF Buff Cochin for my free chick last year!
Just so you know Red Stars are essentially the same thing as ISA Browns, any red bird that is a hybrid for laying is pretty much the same. There may be a different parent cross but, even if it was, it is still relatively the same bird, red colored bird with high egg production. The black sex links are the same as the red except in parent cross and color.

I always find the "bonus" birds to be a funny thing, the way people talk about them. When they pick a bonus bird, I bet they reach into the "boy" pen and grab one just before they shred the rest.

It is kind of like when I use to order meat birds from Hoover's. (And I think Hoovers is a great hatchery).... I would order all roosters and get 6-7 hens in my order...

I made the mistake of ordering all hens and that is exactly what I got. They make an error in sexing when ordering males 5-6% of the time, but never when ordering females...Hmmmmm

@xXStringbeanXx In meat birds the roosters have more value, in layers the hens do, so they get rid of their "junk" birds this way and "stretch" the good ones out.

I am going to candle today. Not sure how smart that is as the eggs have only been baking since last Wednesday or Thursday. I

I should wait, but I have a procedure tomorrow that might keep me down for a few days, or more.

I figured they were very similar breeds, at least that was my convincing argument to get different breeds other than the ones the SO picked. I’m mainly interested in looking at the quality of the birds from each hatchery. The local feed store loves Hoover’s and a lot of hype is out there about McMurray.

I have just told myself it will be a Roo. Then if it just so happens not to be, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. I mean there have been claims of people getting females, and I have even seen claim of someone who got a duck.

While the hatchery birds are ok. If you want true quality buy from a local person, if their root stock is not hatchery quality.

Just ask them were they got them from, or if they show their birds. A bunch of people on here have lots of good birds.

You can make a great flock taking the culls from show people. Ask the used catsalesman, he has a birds in his flock that are better than some birds in the person he stole the culls from flock now...
