Surviving Minnesota!

I had something of great importance to tell you all. 10 seconds ago. By the time I had walked here, sat down and started to type I had forgotten it...

BTW I have read the SOP again on my SS. I am not sure the white primaries are as bad as I thought. They SOP says white and black, it does not say if either or is okay, or it has to be mixed on one feather. It does on the secondaries.

From where? show or hatchery quality?

good luck!

Show quality I believe. I'll likely just sell them or butcher the males and keep the females for layers but I thought they would add some color to the egg basket... I think there is also a choice of leghorns... I've never had a leghorn...

They're from a breeder named Bill something...

I have (knock on wood) been lucky with the senior moment nights so far. I have one of those silly red blinking flashers made to keep predators away. Hopefully it actually works.

You must live in heavy coon area. I am more worried about fox, coyotes and owls.

I have two silly red eyed blinkers at strategic entry points of my run and coop. Gosh knows if they work. But they were reasonable enough to try. I'm sure they work excellent against the fox that raids at 3 in the afternoon.... (Sarcasm there folks)

It's January 90th ..... :hit

Erli: is it the 90th already, then. I've been seeing those posts. LOL. LOve it. I like the guys with the big cut out ice circle and the motor turning it in the middle of the lake and everybody having beers, too. That will be our opener, I've told DH.

I forgot to share this one. It turns out I have a recessive white!(white chick on the right)

They are beautiful. One looks almost Lavender too...?

Stringbean there is a couple right in your neighborhood who raise Marans and sell chicks and started birds I believe. the name has escaped me at the moment but that is what happens as one continues to approach the century mark.

Marans?! Reasonable price? If you figure out who that is... and they are not nuts.

I found a Marans breeder that had $100 a dozen eggs last year. Not gonna do it... Down by Center City.
Man is the only animal that can be skun more than once.

Sitting in the hospital... My Great Grandma fell last night and broke her hip... At 94 that is quite a big deal...
Oh no. A serious deal Holm. Prayers for you all.

No, I'm not sure. She's just never acted like this before. Stayed in the box all day yesterday. Slept in the box last night. Yesterday just started squawking if anyone opens the box. View attachment 1329945
I do believe you have a broody one! Eggs under her breast will keep her moving into those hormones. I have a broody Lavender Ameraucana. I'd love to put something under her.... But I like her eggs too.

erlibrd is in fact early today.
Related to the pecking of the hand, I once had a cockerel in an individual show pen and every time I would feed and water he would attack. He bloodied the back of my hand many times. He finally learned to go to a corner and wait til I was done.
A little warmer here this morning at 15 but high is forecast at only 37.
Roger my 'beloved' New Hampshire took a chunk out of my chin as I was holding him.
Bass-poop. He and I had a come to meeting afterward. Rookie year is always the toughest with these 'pets'.

Moving and marking Broody eggs......mmmm yeah good luck. My broodies have always had a certain amount spunk to them.....Maybe spunk is not the right word maybe .... killer agression is better suited for this situation. And whatever you do....do NOT wear Raspberry Red nailpolish on your fingers and expect to come out with your fingers intact.

This weekend was a whirlwind for us....First we started the weekend with a vehicle breakdown, then State Knowledge Bowl, then a trip to visit my Dad (who is recovering so-so from Total Knee Replacement). Yesterday my son graduated from Cub Scouts and earned his Arrow of Light. While attending the ceremony, we received a call from my husband's parents asking if we could do the evening chores (complete with bedding everyone) as Great Grandma is hospitalized with a heart problem and pnemonia. We are just finishing up with chores when the got home, only to find out they too are down a vehicle. So in typical 3 ring circus fashion we have played car jockey and everyone can get to where they need to go today. This has made me realize how dependent we are on transportation and how transient we have become as a society.

Chicks are doing well.....stupid Rhode Islands have stopped laying....just when I need them the most!
MNChickMom! Wait until they have their own cars. Right now...I'm looking around and see nobody in my house and my car is not burning gas 'just like that'... You won't know what to do with yourself...I'm telling you. hahaha

Checking on my bumblefoot blue Ameraucana. She didn’t come off the roost for an evening treat. It was roost time already though...so I didn't think too much about it. But for whatever reason I gave her abdomen a squeeze and sure enough...internal laying. ARgh...she is sooo PRetty. I hate the idea of losing her.
And with that though...and more callously...there will be more space in the coop for some chicks this year.

Junior and his girls-- I let them all out for free ranging yesterday on that slope that always melts first. I supervised about an hour and 1/2. They loved it. And stayed out most of the afternoon. Sadie stayed out messing around with her ball. So I felt okay. I saw them venture back through the snowy trails I shoveled to connect them to the ranging spot. And then went down and closed the run door for them. I'll open it when I get home this afternoon too.

Junior's one foot still bad. I have him all vet wrapped for support. I'm sure he'll heal but right now he can't scratch with that foot or won't. He must have really dinged it hard.

Sorry you lost that Brahma Stringbean. Things happen for a reason. And may I just say not worrying about chicken problems is a good thing. Especially during a rookie year.

Hello everyone!! Just popping in to say Hi!!! I am a new member and also new chicken Mom living in North Central Minnesota
Good Afternoon and welcome neighbor! (I too am a Central Minnesotan) You have found the right thread for good natured fun and a little bit of education. You will soon figure out who the wise crackers are and the trully wise are.

Until then enjoy the beautiful winter we are having!
