Surviving Minnesota!

I was asked go put together a list for possible state fair 2020 poultry judges. Up to my knowledge they don't need to be a liscensed judge. So if any of you know of any good judges from MN let me know!

I assume for 4H or Junior shows?

Hutchinson MN had Mike Kutzke judging the junior division for 2018 show.
In Benton County MN we have had Doug ??? (I can get his last name.) but he actually kneels down to talk to the little kids.

Week one of adoptive mama has gone well!

I ordered 15 speckled sussex from Cackle. I've always just given my hens chicks during the day without problem, but this particular hen was not having it. After getting them in the dark and sitting on them all night in a pet carrier, she decided she actually loves them. Was not looking forward to brooding chicks myself in the middle of summer, so that was a huge relief.

It's been an interesting year in the poultry world here. It all started because my brahmas are terrible layers (my turkeys lay better than they do) but they are just so beautiful. So I decided to keep a couple of them around since, they have been such good mothers but start another breed.

So I ordered some Columbian Wyandottes from a breeder....well they are all roosters. :( Also ended up having lots of black coloring spots everywhere. So with how difficult it was to track someone down and then end up with those results, I'm passing on the breed for awhile.

At this point I was/am getting desperate for some laying hens, and honestly eggs again. Given the scarcity of SS breeders, I just went with Cackle and am hoping for the best.

I'd like to end up having a nice group of homestead birds with which I can raise a couple nice batches of chicks each year for replacement layers and dinners.....So we'll see what I end up with since they are hatchery birds, but Cackle's have been pretty decent in the past...hoping I get lucky.

Was just about to go down and take pictures of the chicks when my dad came in and said theres a fire and took off, so I'm up at the house waiting just in case anyone calls. My guess is they were baling since they cut that stuff probably 4 days ago. At times it looks like it's slowed down but with it being windy today it's hard to tell
