Surviving Minnesota!

No Orioles or RB Grosbeaks here yet either but it should be soon. I put an orange out yesterday.
I'm hoping to get the garden tilled soon but my small tiller broke last year so DH would have to till it with the big tiller. Not going to happen soon with his back and hernia bothering 😢
Maybe I got stronger and can use the big tiller without grinding myself up.... Ha

No Gridbeaks or Orioles here either. We put out an orange and hummingbird feeder yesterday.

I wish I was closer so I could till your garden.

I am thinking of putting in an order for CXs from Hoover, does anyone want to go in on an order or spilt the cost of raising some?

I am open to boys/girls or mixed.

The earliest we can get them now is June first.

Thanks for the 'if you could' offer Ralphie. I'm seriously considering the no till method.

Im glad Molpet mentioned it.

Perfect time to try though.
For me, tilling brings up weed seeds that keeps sprouting. I have a supply of stuff for mulch, and just cover the weeds and smother them... except some grasses that have runners and creeping Charley. They can take being suffocated and have to be pulled.

I have a couple bales of straw around from last year that I didn't use and several bags of oak leaves, the leaves dry out and blow around easily though so I don't know if I really want to use those.
If anyone has suggestions on mulches, do's or don'ts I'd love to hear them!

I found that running my lawnmower over dropped leaves breaks them up and helps keep the wind from blowing them away.

Ralphie, for the short time you had those pigs around you could just as well hauled them straight to the butcher shop ?
I once viewed a video of some soil expert whose position was that there are only two things which are actually worth composting. Tree leaves and coffee grounds. I don't compost and thus have no opinion.
The problem is trying to get into a butcher shop.

@MNChickMom said the earliest they could get into a locker plant was August.

My son tried to get one in and they simply said were full for the next 6 weeks.

so I will have to go old school and do it myself.

It won’t be that hard, I will take the hams and picnics for smoking, along with the bacon and jowls. I prefer my smoking to the smoking at most butcher shops. They tend to use cold smoke.

The loins will come out to make chops, ribs for grilling and the rest will be ground. I have a pretty nice grinder so it won’t take that long.

I have castings for sausage, and polishes. I am going to try my own mixes of spices. Just so I can say I did it.

I put my chicken poop and chips on a compost pile along with leaves, but it takes forever for the chips to break down. Of course, that could be my fault, I don’t think I water it enough.
