Surviving Minnesota!

I am old enough to have grandparents who were among the early settlers of Carlton county Minnesota. It was a much more unsettled area then, and my great grandfather was in fact killed by a Black Bear while out in the woods.
I have had an experience with a Sow and cubs in the woodlands of St Louis county that causes me to be on alert any time in the woods.
My yard, bird feeders and livestock are off limits to any predators including Bears, and if they trespass here it is in danger to their life.

We got about 3 tenths of an inch of rain here this morning, and it is a welcome relief. The smoke from the fire North of Two Harbors is thick this morning. It was like fog earlier and still smells like you are downwind from a campfire 10 ft. away now. Health advisories are in effect.
Saturday I had the third broody hatch of the summer. Just 2 chicks this time. Anyone need a Wheaten Marans cockerel?

The Smoke from the BWCA fires have reached here today. So I am locked in the house, sort of.

I had to pick up some rye near Watkins this morning. I was a good person today and wore my N-95 mask.

When I got to Becker the air appeared clear. I stepped out of my truck in Watkins and there wasn’t even a hint of smoke in the air.

I thought I would be planting today. I needed to stop at Runnings and Fleetfarm in Monticello, again no smell of smoke and the air looked clean.

However, when I got home in the suburbs of greater metropolitan Orrock, the smoke was back. I needed my mask again.

It is starting to sprinkle so hopefully the air will clean so I can be outside.

We got rain today now it’s hazy with smoke.
Took a drive to little falls for the nice wood shavings but was told they quit carrying them. They have the same crappy ones that fleet farm carries.
A beautiful Orpington hen died yesterday for no apparent reason, not even 1 1/2 yr.
