Today was also great, I am hoping to get to my first Poultry Show this October, and so today I have been reading the Barred Rock breeders thread from the beginning. I’m going to try to learn about the breed standard for the Barred Rock, and compare my barred rocks to some more pure bred birds

its been a few days, since It happened, but at least everything is good now. Some time during the afternoon when I was away from the coop, a piece of plywood fell over, because it so blessed windy here at times. But one of my barred rock chicks was underneath and got squished….worse, when I walked over to check I stepped on the plywood and she squeezed, I panicked cried and screamed. She got up and ran away sideways, but I did catch her and began my typical triage and basic treatment which is a dark quiet room, clean hay, a small blanket, food and water, and an aspirin, to keep her quiet.

at first she could stand but stumbled and crashed into the cage each time she stood, my heart sank, but followed through with my treatment and checked in the morning. She was better, and by the next morning she was gobbling up her fermented grains, but gave her one more night. I was so relieved when she got up to run away from me catching her in the cage. When I brought her back to the coop and placed her in her inside her ‘sister’, scooted inside to see her, the bond was amazing to see.
Now 1 week later she is perfect again.

Hello all , Chickens all fine during this hideous heat wave, but not sure I am. Might be the right time to just pick up and move on. My hen pecky from my avatar will always be with me, as will you all. When I resurface I will begin posting again.

Hello Again,
Life has settled down giving me some time to write here again.
im not even sure where to start, several amazing things happened with my flock, so I guess I’ll start with those.

yesterday my 5 month hens began laying. I collected my first blue egg. It was so amazing to see, the pic does not do it justice, it’s a lovely shade of blue. Not sure which hen laid it, but the egg was preceded by the squatting behaviour Pullets exhibit when they are near to laying the first egg.

One other event during the summer was very surprising...
Let me ask you if a hard molt ever caused you to believe you had a new hen ?
A very scraggly hen appeared on day and I was certain she was dropped off. But on count I realized my hen showy was missing ( her name comes from her beautiful feathering ).
I eventually accepted that it was showy, but oooh did she look different so many feathers missing....but she is looking better now. Still looks nothing like her former self...

In the valley that I live in, there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, perfect for creating a nutritious frozen treat that my hardworking hens, and Roos plus the under1’s can enjoy and get hydration, and replacement of electrolyte. This was inspired by our local Facebook poultry community…with a secret ingredient…molasses. Which I didn’t have on hand but will pick up and add to my first aid/ convalescent box.
