That’s the one I think is a boy. The white barring seems a little wider than the black in spots, and girls BR’s are usually so dark that it wouldn’t be common to have any light feathering on the face.Beard face
Gosh, the barring can seem to vary so much when it is coming in, so I try not to worry too much when they are early as it seems so subjective and rapidly changing. But I haven't raised that many barred birds for the experience to say it shouldn't have a white face. All my dark birds are hatched with white on the under sides including their chin that fills in at different rates individually. That’s the one I think is a boy. On barred Rocks... dark wash legs are supposed to indicate female where as lighter would be male. Come to find out that trait can actually be sex linked as well... however considered to be an inaccurate clue in hatchery birds which have not been maintained to produce that trait VERY clearly. Hatchery breeds are good examples of specific breeds... just not perfect when trying to compare to the standard... in fact, I was SURE one of my hatchery BR was LIGHTER colored than the others... making her a boy. She was lighter! But not the same as a cock... she kept us guessing for a little while since I was newer to chickens back then.
So you agree... that IS a bearded face? Or is it's neck swollen? I almost feel like I'm seeing some brown on the face but it could be lighting tricks. Not feeling that bird is pure Rock.
One other thing... the last pic in post #12... when I zoom in on it the chick in front has missing feathers and red angry skin showing... I would have to presume that to be some type of parasite (lice or mites maybe), and I recommend treating them. Permethrin spray is my top choice for ease, cost, and effectiveness. Let me know if you need more help in that regard!
To me the bird in the back of this pic has just as much white as beard face in front of him. It's the last pic in row 2 of post 12 if you can't zoom in here. Again... for me, color is still coming in too much to make a confident assessment of gender. But I do like the challenge!![]()
