Swedish Flower Hen Breeding

Good point. I had never seen a barred SFH either. I do prefer mottling over barred/cuckoo any day. Thanks for the insight. I will contact the seller and she if she has others.
Consider another source if you're gonna breed with intent.. the mottling doesn't look impressive to me though that blue bird is beautiful! No rudeness intended, maybe it will continue to come in?? Anyone who would offer a barred bird as SFH I would have to question their breeding program and knowledge heavily.

Lots of hatcheries are offering them these days, though it's late in the season already this year. I also often see decent looking roosters available on CL farm and garden section. Some breeders her on BYC that are NPIP certified as well.

I do like this breeder, she has some very impressive birds and all the chicks I've hatched out (minus the barred cockerel) are all pretty and nice!!

Eggsighted will you clarify which “bluebird” you were referring to please? You weren’t talking about my hen were you?

Also, mine has much more white now. She is getting prettier by the day. That's an old pic
They can change so much over time.. one reason if there aren't serious faults that are obvious culls then birds are grown out much longer before breeder selections are made. They don't even fully mature until 1 year + and will change some with each molt.

That's great, I don't know the whole story and just made some suggestions. I'm glad you've had prior contentment with that breeder! Sometimes, accidents happen to and sneak by the best of us, I know first hand!

If you're breeding with intent.. some genetic diversity could still be a good thing.. even if they all say originally came from GFF.. raised in different locations, using different feed, with different weather pattern, and being selected for different qualities, etc.. *MIGHT* add some better over all genetic diversity.. Does it truly ass genetic diversity or not?? Well, I'm Christian but according Darwin.. perhaps some adaptations do take place??

Maybe they would be more distant cousins than siblings.. not sure how many roos/hens your source keeps or how closely related their stock is. If you haven't already, consider looking at line breeding as a possibility.

An easy read, I'm enjoying for review..

Okay thank you for clearing that up. I have one bird who is my lead hen Queen Poppie that is similar bro this gal but she has more white flowering in the tips of her wings. You might have seen her earlier but I will try to show a pic of her. They are 14 weeks old. I tried to find some pics of just the three of my SFH together. I believe you will see the three of them stand out. One of them my very favorite baby is the very light one in color. She is Matcha-Mama’s baby and leader in addition to Queen Poppie. If I can get Matcha to do it and I usually can then the rest will follow. My SFH are just the sweetest and best girls. We love them so.

Wow! I have learned so much from your guys this month! Thank you for sharing so much information with me. I went to the links you provided and checked those out and they were great as well. Did hate that about the attack on the other poor rooster though and the drowning victims. Those really broke my heart. Sorry for you guys. We all have those hard lessons that we have to learn whether we had any part in them or not and whether or not we did any wrong doing or made any mistakes whatsoever. So no one should feel like things are their fault when they didn’t know or couldn’t help it. Somethings are just beyond our control. We all are well most of us are trying to be the best chicken keepers and wranglers on the other rare days that we have to wrangle them for the tough stuff that we can be. We love them like our pets that most of the time they are and try to feed them and care for their injuries and illnesses like our children’s problems when they arise. So I tell ya I appreciate every ounce of all knowledge I can learn from an experienced chicken keeper willing to share because there is so much to know. Thank you so much

Can I ask if anyone knows what my 2 Swedish flowers will produce?
