Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Swedish flower hen chicks with topknot? I just hatched two chicks that could pass for polish chicks, anyone else hatch some of these from a crested x crested breeding?

I've asked about crested to crested breeding more than once here. I think the answer is a secret.

I haven't tried it yet and right now I have way too many chicks to make any more! (Anybody in the Seattle-Tacoma area need some chicks?)

I've gotten chicks with pouffy heads from a crested SFH roo x an Ameraucana hen (obviously uncrested). I've NOT gotten pouffy heads yet from SFH x SFH. It's kind of wierd, really.

I was just out staring at some Swedish that I was calling "mottled". They are red and grey with white flecks. I suddenly realized they were identical to the red mille fleur but with grey wherever the others have black. I'm kinda thinking these chickens may follow the b/b/s rules. I'm just trying to figure out the red- some if my grey/red mottled started out as red chicks and some as grey. Most of my red mille fleur started out as red chicks but one dark mahogany roo was black with red just around his eyes.

Hey everyone, these where my eggs. It was a crested x crested breeding, please let me know if you think I am doing something wrong here. I can remove him, I have a second non-crested roo. I am hatching SFH's today. I will update if I get any with a topknot. (Also, no chance of a sneaky roo, I only have SFH roos at my house.) I personally like the crested and thought that I would get a higher ratio of crested this way. Thank everyone!

I've just heard that breeding crested to crested will result in a crest bigger than what is practical for a free ranging chicken.

So anniesmom, you've only bred the non crested to the non crested so far? Also, what percentage of chicks that came from the Am/SFH hatch were crested?

I think you need to wait until they grow up and see what they look like before making decisions about doing something wrong. I'm sure yours and klf73's babies are (and are going to be) absolutely adorable now and will grow up to be stunning adults. Keep track of what percentage have the topknots, regular crests and no crests if you can. SFHs have been around in the wild for hundreds of years. You have to assume that crested x crested happens there. Roosters aren't picky.

With as feisty as a couple of my cockerels were, young ones would have been well protected crest or no crest!

KKH - I do have one crested pullet in the pen with three non crested pullets and two non crested cockerels. I can't know for sure which are hers but a good number are crested. Next year I will have more chickens to work with.

The first four Crested SFH x Ameraucana chicks are ALL crested. Those are the Peanut x Gwen chicks. I did not get that from the other crested cockerel, Ct (Now gone to freezer camp. He was evil.). Only about half or less of his are crested.

I'm going out to get more pictures. Will take paper and pen and try to count for percentages.

I think they are absolutely beautiful
I will get a pic later with their brothers and sisters but here are the two with topknots

I finally got an updated picture of my mille fleur rooster, Beatus, now 6 montths old. I recently added him back to the flock to try to hatch some babies from him.

As for the crests, the eggs for my younger batch came from Deumig10, and I know she has crested roos and hens, so it stands to reason at least one of my chicks would have two crested parents. I think the biggest crested rooster I have is Stellan, now six months old:
