Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Here are my SFH (and of course when I say my SFH, I mean Bear too, even tho he's not one! - I'm still a bit bitter about it)

Here is Runt, I think he/she's crest. He's still smaller then the others, but is growing well. Very spunky. I love all the colors that are coming in.

This is 2 Face - Seems to be mostly black with brown. I can't wait to see what she looks like all feathered out!

Here is Bear. That's a GREAT BIG comb for 5.5 weeks. He's a week older then the SFH. He is gonna be beautiful (or handsome I should say)

Another pic of 2 Face

This is BB. Definitely crested!

Another pic of BB

I hope I have at least 1 boy and 1 girl.

OK, this is crazy weird.
I went to do a bedtime check and popped open the rear of the coop. I noticed the feeder was low on feed and took it out. It's a hanging feeder that holds a couple pounds of feed.
Chick was stuck IN the feeder! No kidding!
She seems hurt, like a bit sore, and she has a broken toe. Lucky for her, I am a practicing veterinarian

so I'm giving her some treatments and I expect she will recover.
I wonder if they sell caps for that feeder....I didn't see any at TSC, but...
I have it in there because I am still trying to make sure they return to the coop and in case of bad wea
They have lids, I think its from farmtec

Does anyone have photos of a specific pair of Swedes and their adult progeny- perhaps a couple/three hatches? I'm trying to figure out what color combinations a particular hen and rooster will produce. Interested to know your experience, if you'd like to pm me. I am having a tough time figuring out the chicken genetics from color charts I've seen thus far. It's like trying to read a foreign language.

For those who have wondered about the feather sexing on SFH chicks, it is pretty accurate! I feather sexed them when they were 2 days old and told my husband I should have one roo and the rest hens. I really figured that would be wrong but, turns out, I was right. Not bad odds.... just hope my roo stays strong!

I have been planning on getting some breeder pens built for the specific purpose of pairing up birds to get a better idea of color production, but haven't gotten it done yet. I would really be interested in those statistics as well. Although one of the things that I love about this breed is not knowing just what to expect!!

I have found it to be pretty accurate as well. I am not at the point of using it for culling purposes yet though. I would like to have two brooders and separate them at two days, and grow them out to see just how consistently accurate it is. The problem for me has been that so many of them look so similar that its hard to keep track of which is which as they grow. As far as numbers I have found it to be accurate. I had one hatch of 13 Ameraucanas that I feather sexed and came up with 11 pullets and 2 cockerels. I didn't think that could possibly be correct, but sure enough there were 11 pullets from that batch. I checked my new little black SFH chick today and it looks like a pullet. One of the ONLY times that I have been hoping for a rooster! I am thrilled with her though.

Bernie56, just put a zip tie on the legs of the boys..no need for separate brooders.

Kimbroe1981, your honorary SFH Bear is really cute. Your last little crested one looks barred. anniesmom had some hatch out that looked like that.
All pretty birds and great colors.

(Removed the pics to shorten the page :)

Your babies are ADORABLE! Love the colors... that's one thing I just love about this breed. There are so many possibilities and color combos - you just never know what's going to come out of each egg!
And Bear - that comb! LOL! He'll be 1/2 chicken, 1/2 comb as an adult from the looks of it. What a pretty boy :)
