I am amazed at the foraging ability of these guys. I have the three running loose with 5 barnyard mixes and a poor Silkie, all hatched at the same time in July. I was out walking the lower pasture fence, and there was the gang, little Alien (the Silkie) looking totally confused, but the other 8 were out foraging away. Their coop is up the hill on the other side of the house.

I need to watch and make sure Alien gets back. Not too worried about the others.

Let me put a few more questions out there...

Comb: (Rooster / Hen) single
In comparison to other breeds, would you all say the average SFH roster has a Small, Medium or Large single comb?

Wattles: In comparison to other breeds, would you all say the average SFH has Small, Medium or Large wattles?
How is the shape and color in comparison to other breeds?

Beak: color black, brown
In comparison to other breeds, would you say the beak was longer, shorter or average?
Would you say it was straighter, more curved or average?

Eye Color: My chicks seem to have greenish eyes)

Hackles:

Cape:

Breast:
In comparison to other breeds, would you say the SFH's chest was of narrow breadth, medium breadth or wide breadth?

Would you further classify the adult SFH's breast with any of the following terms?
Broad, Narrow, Deep, Rounded, Flat, Shallow

Wings:
Size in comparison to other breeds (Small, Medium, Large)

Back:
Length in comparison to other breeds (Small, Medium, Large)
Width in comparison to other breeds (Narrow, Average, Wide)
Shape in comparison to other breeds (Straight, Slightly Concave, Very Concave)

Saddle:

Tail: (Rooster / Hen)
In comparison to other breeds, would you say the SFH rooster's tail was Short, Medium or Long?
Would you classify it as "Straight?"
What angle would you say it sticks out at?

Thigh:
Would you classify thigh length as Short, Medium or Long?

Shank:

SFH legs seem to all be free of feathers.

Leg Color: white, grey, Light tan

Feathering: colors, red. orange, yellow, grey, blue, black, white, creamy white, gold.

I am pleased to say that there is some promising color patterns showing up in my little ones. I know that you can't really know what they will look like until adult plumage comes in, but I'm seeing a lot of white! Now that I have options, there will be some fairly severe culling going on. I'm thinking that red/white roosters won't have much of a future here, at least in the short term, and all splash hens will probably move to the layer pen.

How exciting! The huge variance in color leaves so many possibilities in this breed. Please post updated pictures soon! I'd love to see what you're getting.
How many SFH do you have now??

I have the exact same experience. My SFHs range all over the pasture and out to the hay field. The forage great. And my poor silkie wanders around lost. They are also very quick to respond when I call for them. They all come running and my poor silkie stands in the middle of the field looking around with a bewildered expression, "Where'd everybody go?"

Breed standard?
there is no breed standard for swedish flower hens. the perfect swedish flower hen is just that, a swedish flower hen.
Establishing a breed standard would just ruin this breed, ruin its variety and different types it comes in.
The swedes have done an awesome job keeping this chicken the way it is, perfect as it is, do not try to come in with establishing a breed standard, for whatever purposes you might find that to be necessary.
I could compare it to the Jack Russell Terrier (www.therealjackrussell.com), which does not have a specific breed standard, but rather comes in different types, there is short legged ones there is longer legged ones, what matters more is character, hunting ability, certain features, but not an overall conformation to one specific type.
Same with SFHs, they come in different colors, etc. the only thing that could be put as a breed standard, is character, maybe combs, etc. but overall the SFH comes in a lot of different types, colors, none of them better than the other or one to be the breed standard the others to be less breed standard conform, no!
