Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Meet our lovely Swedish Flower Hens! We have 4 spunky ones that have been such a great addition to our flock. They are about 5-6 months old. No eggs yet, but hoping for some soon!

ABOVE: Lovisa, Agda, and Bold-Eagle(ony un-crested SFH we have that my son named since she looks like an eagle he says).

Agda (named after a chicken in a Swedish song), our friendliest SWF. She loves to follow me around the backyard.

Elsa. She's actually much more grey with almost not brown, but for some reason this picture came out strange. It was a surprise to us how gorgeous she came out to be!

Your birds are lovely! Welcome to the Swedish Flower Hen thread. We're happy to have you here :)

WELCOME to the best thread on BYC!!! You have Beautiful birds!

Well, I went the same breeder again on these eggs that have been incubating. I had 9 go into lock down...this time? Only 3! What's up with that..you just never know. At least they are looking good. I can't wait until Thursday, I usually look forward to seeing pips the day before. I get excited to see one, makes me think things may be going ok in there for the others. Only three, sooo hoping for a crested one this time.
Same breeder, same temp..same humidity..same bator...different out come. I am just hoping, that the hatch rate with the ones locked down, will be the same as the 9..all hatch!

well, you forgot to mention but i'm guessing, same shipping method. which means nothing's predictable with USPS.

Yes, same shipping method! USPS! And that...is very unpredictable. My mailman told me how they handle them at our Provo office. He was describing the belt that boxes are put into from the truck..then, as they get to the end, there is a big mail bag they drop into. Well, it's according to how full that bag is at the time your box gets there, as to how far they fall. If it was just changed, it's a pretty good drop. If it's almost full, you lucked out.

Interesting! I was wondering the same thing about alternative carriers. Unfortunately every chain (or carrier) is only as good as its weakest link. Only takes one person having a bad day to scramble eggs

Very true! We never know what happens along the way. For some reason, I don't think going UPS or Fed Ex would be any better. I've see them both, deliver packages to my door, and others, by throwing them from the bottom step to the porch, go up the steps, and ring the door bell. What? Serious.

Quote: I asked the fed ex in our area and they said no. however, I do know someone who routinely ships through fed ex and just doesn't label anything about being "live". I have been meaning to ask her about it and will try to do so but when I specifically asked if i could send hatching eggs, they said no. our Post office is situated such that I cannot actually get anything to be shipped "overnight" including chicks which is a huge bummer so I have been exploring other options...it's just that there aren't ANY other options. Bummer!
