bulldogma,
I notice you are in sw virginia. Look out for this storm and be careful of the follow up snow. Gloria Jean

Thank you, Gloria Jean! Yes - we've been starting the process of battening down the hatches and storing extra water in case we lose electricity/well pump.

Interestingly, it's starting to look as though the storm will be going further north before making landfall. We may see some rain and a bit of wind, but this morning's projections are looking better for us. Looks like the folks in Maryland, Delaware and PA could get hit pretty hard though!

Quote: according to the NWS in blacksburg, we will probably see wind gusts of 40-60 as well as rain. depending how the cold front hits during this time it could also turn into 4-6" of snow. a friend works with them and was up there yesterday talking to the guys 'in the know'.

Agreed - they were saying that all day yesterday. Then Sandy hitched a touch to the east in the middle of the night sending the projected path more Northward.

That's the freaky thing about hurricanes. You really can't know what is going to happen. One possible path (of like, 12 possible paths) suggests the storm could hook more North, bounce off the cold front coming from the north and make a loop-da-loop down into Roanoke! There are so many possibilities and the way hurricanes go, it will surprise everyone and do something entirely unexpected and unprojected - LOL.

Check out this site. They are constantly updating the path and projections. Be sure to click on the "Model Tracks" tab on the map right under the date. All the model paths change by the hour.

Yeah - we're still going to do some real preparation. I figure if we do, we won't see any nasty weather at all and if we don't, we'll get a direct hit - LOL!

Quote: in addition to battening down the hatches, you might check your generator, make sure the oil is clean and you have fuel for it on hand. 8) that will practically guarantee safety. (sometimes)

we've got a spare 5kw at the shop that john's working on, but it's only got a couple gallon tank right now. he needs to add an RV tank to it, or maybe a marine tank pickup (so you can just switch gas cans). not to mention the 2 at the house. 5.5 kw and a 3.5 kw...

We were gone for a day after they had the bad storms one yr. in Florida. Someone came by here in the mtns and cut the chain and lock from our Gen.

Yes the snow ,at this point in the mtns, looks like it may become our enemy I have extra batteries, a wood burning stove ,plenty of wood, and large bathtubs to fill with water plus my drinking water about ready. I will be ready by Mon. night. Good luck everyone. Gloria Jean

Ummm... what generator?

Yeah. We would have one if we could afford it. It's near the top of our "We really need a..." list. We will fill everything handy with water, and we have a gas fireplace in the house for heat, but unfortunately no generator yet. :( If things get really bad, our landlords have one... we'll just descend upon their house like a swarm of locusts - LOL.

Even if they find ki4got, it's not like they could make off with anything fast down that driveway! LOL! Need 4 wheel drive and innards of steel to make it all the way up there. Not to mention they'd be facing down the barrel of something unpleasant if they tried.
