Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Ok eveyone I have an updated photo! of the two I hatched fom Icatty!
Hatch day!!!
This Morning!!

and I am not sure if the wing sexing works on these but here are some pics of the wings if anyone can tell me??

That one is the reddish-brown chick

And the black one! I know it may be hard to see but if you enlarge it it may help! it has a long one short one long short but the short ones have a long sting looking feather out the to of them, any ideas!
I believe its long short long short = pullet
long long long = rooster
is this right?
Well - all chicks will have both short and long... let me try to rephrase a little... All the longest feathers are primary and the second row are secondary. You look just at the primary - the first row. For Pullets each of the primary feathers will be more likely to vary in length - So I would say the reddish one is a cockerel - and will likely be a very pretty one! The dark one is really hard to tell in the photo as they are all still in pinfeather stage. I would lean toward that one being a pullet.
Well...it right now it looks like only 1 chick is going to hatch out of the 4 SFH and 3 BCMs.

Well... 1 is better than none - and it's a beautiful little thing, too! Sorry you didn't get more!
thanks! this is the photo his breeder sent me... will get more today or tomorrow once he's here.

is blue the grayish color mixed in on his chest/wings? at this point i have no SFH girls, so i will be interested to know if there are any particularly interesting-seeming crosses with my other breeds (cuckoo marans, silver-penciled plymouth rocks, light sussex, basque, cream legbar, and australorp)... i suppose there's only one way to find out, just curious!

I have had such a great time reading this thread.

I was able to purchase a young Swedish Flower Hen at an auction this fall. Of course I was told it was a pullet....and as time has gone on....it has magically turned into a cockerel!!

If any one would like him, I would gladly gift him....I would love to trade him for a hen, a yearish old...open to breed. My neighbors will sadly not allow me to have roos.

I am in Upton, MA. Pick up only.

Here's my lonely SFH that hatched. I'm scrambling right now trying to find someone w/in driving distance to get a few "hatch-mates" to add to the nest under mom so this little one isn't all by itself. Hopefully some doors will open up here soon.

Mom is breaking up some food for baby here.

Cute overload!! Looks to be a very pretty chick!

My boys scared me to death. I work weekends, and I was home to pop their coop open this morning. No birds came out. I looked, and no birds. I was dying, about to have a stroke, wondering if my family had forgotten to check on them. Turned out they decided it was better to roost with the bantam Cochin flock, even though the head roo in that coop is a bully -- he will fight these big guys if they look crosseyed at the girls -- and that A frame coop has no roosts in it.

They have done well in the snow we got for Christmas. The rest of the chickens thought it horrible, but the guys have been out scratching around in it. I've been building a lasagna garden with the horses' leftover hay and stuff, and they have been "helping" me by scratching around in that too.

Hard to keep up with this thread!!

lawatt, he's a beauty!

jbarrett, congratulations on your chickies. I agree with Bulldogma on the feather sexing. I'll be curious to see how accurate this is. I'll be trying it next time I hatch them out next spring.

Leah's Mom
, an only child :) That chick is going to color out nicely.

Seabrightsrock, I should have kept a crested roo! That's what caught my eye the first time I see these chickens.

One of my pullets broke her leg. I have her in a splint, in a small cage in the coop. I don't know how it happened. I suspect the donkey stepped on her. Always seems to be something around here.
