Woke up to a second chick! The rest of the eggs are quiet, but I'll double check later. It will not surprise me if even a broody doesn't get great results considering how hard I tried to hatch them and didn't get better than 40% on my first try.

Forgot my camera when I raced outside with excitement. Kids are now up, so we will go out together in a bit.

Last night I heard a soft peep coming from the incubator but none of the SFH has pipped yet. I woke up this morning all excited but still nothing. Perhaps some action will transpire while I'm at work today. I didn't turn the incubator around to look in the back so maybe there's a pip on the far side of an egg if I heard something. We shall see. I got my tracking info for my chicks from Greenfire. I have 4 SFH coming from there along with 3 pairs of Cream Legbars. Going to be a peep-filled day either way!

Is a curled toe a genetic defect or a function of a post hatching experience? I have pics to post tomorrow of my SFH. One of which with a beautiful brown crest on a red& white speckled body has the curled toe on one foot.
there's some debate on that... in my experience, my only curled toe chicks were ones that were shrink wrapped and had to be helped out, later than they normally would have.

i have one other girl with a few crooked toes (and her name is crooked toe LOL) but that came from being stepped on by a horse. (same horse who's good at stepping on everyone else too). she hatched normally. i have yet to breed any of the crooked toes that hatched that way, to see if it's genetic or not.

I have found it interesting that it's much more common (in my experience) with Guinea keets than it is with chicks. I have only had one or two chicks with this issue, and it was correctable. I'd really like to know what causes it, many believe it has to do with humidity issues at hatch, but I don't chance it when breeding...if they have any sort of issue, I don't breed them.
