Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I would say non crested can produce crested. I have a Cream Legbar rooster that is not crested but his off spring with a marans hen have produced crested chicks. I know it's not the same breed but Legbar can be crested or non-crested like SFH.

The rooster is from Greenfire. The hens are from hens from Greenfire. The Splash are white with gray spots but the camera reflection did not show the color. All hens have had chicks with lots of colors.

Sadly, I have a Swedish Flower Hen rooster, Rocky, who is going to have to find a new home. I love him but I can't keep a rooster. He hatched on March 20th, from eggs from Papa Brooder. I am in NE NC and if anyone is interested in adding him to their flock, please let me know. He is very handsome with a dark mahogany color on his back with red and gold coloring also. He is not crested.

re: crest vs no crest... the crested gene is dominant, which means to pass it along at least one parent HAS to carry it.

now it's possible that maybe the roo is crested but the crest is muted by his comb. I've noticed my crested roo's isn't as obvious as it was when he was younger... then the comb grew and the crest kind of faded away somewhat...

and yes, if both parents are heterozygous for crested (carrying only 1 copy of the gene) then they could produce 'double crested' (homozygous) which may also go hand in hand with vaulted skulls (early death and/or other problems, if they hatch at all) and overly large crests (not good for free ranging birds as it would inhibit vision behind and above, making them more prone to becoming dinner), heterozygous crested chicks, and uncrested chicks... not positive of the abbrev, but say crested is Cr and uncrested is cr+ (+ denotes wild type, capitalization is dominant, lower case recessive) the 3 possibilities would be Cr/Cr, Cr/cr+ and cr+/cr+ (uncrested) - basically 25/50/25 ratio of the 3 varieties. if you breed Cr/cr+ to Cr/cr+. if you breed Cr/cr+ to uncrested, you'll get a 50/50 mixture typically.

probabilities in genetics is the % chance that any one chick will be one or the other. that does not mean that you'll get half and half, tho it's possible. just like having kids. you've always got a 50/50 chance of boys vs girls, but you KNOW someone out there, i'm sure, that has all boys or all girls. some genes are just stronger than others and win out more often than not... (strength of the swimmers, unknown lethal factors that prevent development, who knows what...)

a few pics I just snapped...

:((((

Opened my bantam Cochin coop this morning, where two SFH chicks live along with 4 roosters and 3 hens, to carnage.

A coon got in somehow (I closed the coop myself last night) and destroyed my birds. The only survivors are two buff barred boys and two hens (the moms), one of whom looks bad. The SFH kids were killed, along with the two head roosters and one mom. I screamed, sobbed, and hubby had to clean up before the kids found it. I loved those birds. Those Cochins were my first chickens, and I had had them exactly 1 year :( What a horrible thing to find first thing in the morning and on our 20th anniversary.

I am declaring war on raccoons. Even though I do not shop on Sunday I am headed to the store after church for a trap and bait, an electric fencing kit (i just ordered meat chicks to put in a hoop coop and need to fortify the defenses), and a shotgun (maybe). Going to lobby hard for an LGD.

Sunnyskies,I'm so sorry to hear that.

Oh NO!! So sorry! :-(

I am sick about the loss of the two SFH. One was a beautiful blue and red pullet I was hoping to cross with a blue and red rooster.

Mysteriously, I don't see how the coon got in the coop. I did close it after dark, after visiting the neighbors, so I'm horrified at the idea that perhaps my birds were dead when I closed the coop. I had one absolutely brazen daytime attack a few weeks ago. This coon is evil.

I suspect one of the surviving hens won't make it. I have her in a hospital coop, and I think she may have internal damage. Doing all I can do for her. She laid an egg a few minutes ago, which probably didn't help.

I have 14 eggs from this coop to set, and hopefully one or two will be barred buff, but I won't be able to replace the SFH yet. The POL girls are holding out, but once they get going...
