Is slipped wing common in the breed? I have several cockerels that seem to be letting their wing "slip" down. If it was geese I'd think the wings were a bit too heavy right now and it should correct itself. But I'm not sure that happens in chickens. Does it? Could it be split wing? I know I'd have to catch them to find out on that one, but I think I'm being paranoid. They are only 16 weeks old right now.
I had a young roo in my original stock that had bad split wing that hung down like that. It never corrected itself, and I did have to cull him. Good luck with them. Its great to see another SFH owner in Atlanta! I'm just south of Atlanta, near Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Where did you get your birds? My original stock came from Jordan Farms in Cairo, Ga. I also got some chicks from Kimberley35042 in Alabama (she said she got eggs from someone in N.C. but couldn't remember who), and I've got some nice juveniles from a swap with Dalisgrams in N.Y. that I will be using next spring. I'm always looking for connections with other breeders, especially those close by!

I've had the worst time trying to post a pic- anyway here is the lone SFH chick that hatched 3 days ago, I took the pic last night. The pic looks like it's head is bald, but it's a dried sticky patch where is got goo from toddling around in the bator in the shells from the 2 other chicks that hatched.

Sorry to do it this way, but will not let me post multiple pics in the post

Hey Bernie, et al... I'm not too far from you, I'm just north of Chattanooga.
Glad there are some folks who have "Flower Children" (as my husband calls them) close to home.

Bernie's chickens lay a very nice egg, largest I've seen yet (and I went through some dozens trying to hatch eggs), and I loved the color of the two my broody hatched. Definitely recommend trading eggs with Bernie ;)

Back to the split wing...I have a young GF roo I'm watching. He seems to hold his wing oddly, but he is still young yet. It might still be OK.

On the subject of "split wing".....

I have SF from several sources to try to keep as much genetic diversity as possible. I have one group that was a 5 chick hatch, four of which are boys. They were born May 15th. These boys all have wings where the end of the wing sort of hangs and just looks like it doesn't match up with the rest of the wing. When I spread the wing, all these boys have big gaps between where the primary and secondary would come together. If I understand right, "split wing" is when just one of the last primaries is missing just before the beginning of 2nds? These have like two or 3 feathers missing right now. Then I have another group from a different source that are hatchmates that were born june 14th. Their wings fit fine and when you spread their wings, they have all feathers although the last primaries are smaller as they are obviously just coming in. I am reading that it can take up to about 5 months for these feathers to all come in on some birds but I'm definitely concerned about that one family of boys that all have the hanging wings. Even though I am reading that some just take longer, I find it odd that these much younger chicks from same family all have perfect wings already. Anyone with more experience with "split wing" have any thoughts to share? Thanks!

They can grow and develop at different rates. Give those weird-wing boys a few more months. Sometimes they grow in the first primary and sometimes they don't. The condition is genetic, so it wouldn't be totally unusual for a group of related birds to have it, unfortunately.

Thanks for the endorsement SunnySkies! Did you only get 1 pullet from those eggs?

That's Great! Chattanooga is only about 2 hrs. drive from us. Its definitely nice to know of sources close by. I have a swap coming from Raven1 in Carthage, TN., but not until spring because of work travels. I'll have to check where it is, maybe I can just drive up for them and meet some folks along the way.
