Swedish Flower Hen Thread

my2boysteacher, when I enlarge the picture I see hackle and saddle feathers of a male as well as male crest. I don't think he is 5 months yet either. He would be more developed.

Thanks for the info. Darn! That is the last time I buy a chicken from someone I don't know. :(. I have no room for another rooster, but I really like him. He has so much personality already.

She's beautiful!! I have two Gunnar chicks growing out that will look like her. (This makes me very happy!)
and I have one! 8)

no chances with her, she's in the breeding pen already, even tho she's too young yet.

Leigh I love this photo- and what a pretty little hen too! I need to take a pic of my SFH chick that did survive, it & the other 2 chicks are doing so well-

Leah's Mom- she is very pretty- the top pic looks like one of my girls, but the side view I see how much black she is- very striking!

My second son was helping me feed this morning. Wasp, my 6 month old SFH roo, jumped him unexpectedly while i was putting feed in the other feeder, and my son was just standing there. Left scratches on his arm and side. Wasp has shown some aggression to me in the past, but now he runs fast the other way when I come. I hadn't seen it shown to the kids.

Ugh. I wanted to keep this rooster.

And I wonder what we are doing wrong to make them mean? We didn't handle Wasp at all.

I'm not really set up right now to confine Wasp, but I guess I have to.

SunnySkies - I'm sorry to hear that! Noisy, fast-moving things are often perceived as a threat by roosters. Most children fit the bill perfectly. I kept warning my middle kid about that, but she didn't really believe me until Gunnar started jumping on her and only her. (She was also notorious for chasing the chickens, trying to pick them up and just terrorizing them in general.)

I now have a no running and no yelling rule in my chicken yard. Interestingly, none of the 6 boys we currently have in the yard have had any issues. The two I got from you follow me around like two dogs where ever I go, but there is no malice - just curiosity and ready to call the girls over for noms.

Who can say? Part of it can be personality, but part of it could be that my kids play elsewhere and are sent out of the chicken yard if they get noisy or start being wild. I'm doing an experiment with one of the boys I have growing out. he was always very friendly so I go out and pick him up every day and snuggle with him. I don't handle the rest of the boys at all. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Thanks! I hope some of that black comes out in the chicks.

Seems that this girl is the "Atilla" of the group that are this age. She is in charge of them (not the older girls of course) and she seems to flaunt it.

Poor Miss Gray is the new underdog. (I think it's the dorky hair.

Miss Gray: (This photo makes her look darker than she is.)
