Swedish Flower Hen Thread

BTW... the mille fleur cockerel in the top photo of the three above is named Vacker - it means "handsome" in Swedish.

I think Gunnar would be proud.
'vacker' in Swedish means beautiful. 'snygg' or' tjusig' means handsome in Swedish (husband is Swedish that's how I know)

LOL I think Vacker will work for this mille fleur fella... not sure I could remember the others.
We have a lot of strange names here and they tend to take on short cuts.
For instance, Whenny, my female maremma who is due next Friday, is called that become her real name is Emerwhen... which means "shepherdess" in Elvish.

seems like mostly the roos get names, the girls are referred to by their roo.

My SFH are 10 weeks old... thought it was time for more pics... these are Gunnar babies.
The first two pics are the cockerels "I think"... although I'd love to have some confirmation on the second one... keep wishing for a pullet, but not sure.
Mr. Blue is obviously a cockerel... and acts like it... sweet but most pushy and curious.
Mr or Miss Yellow acts more like a pullet and if he's a cockerel he is obviously less mature for his age.
What's everyone think on the Mr. (or Miss) Yellow? (2nd pic).
The remaining 4 are pullets for sure... so excited to get a good hatching and good mix.

The last pic is of most of them together... 5 of the 6... not sure where the last little girl is hiding, she is very light like Mr. Yellow and is the smallest.
I really love these little birds... they are so sweet and cute, and so very entertaining.

Beautiful Chicks! Gunnar would be VERY proud! I would say pullet, but they have surprised me before. Keeping my fingers crossed it's a girl!

If I could afford one of your dogs I'd reserve one. We're putting our beautiful Brandy Ann down in the next few days due to heart failure. She's 10 and has been the best dog EVER!

GGGGRRRRRRR AAAAAARRRGH

I think I might give up on SFH. I got 8 eggs, 4 hatched. now my insane 6 month border collie has killed both my mille fleur SFH. Of course the 2 he has gotten (one today, one a couple weeks ago) were both pullets, the rooster is safe and sound.

The problem is the SFHs will not stay in the confines of the run, they are determined to roam the yard every day. The run is 1/4 of my yard, s.o they have a ton of room. but even when I pen the dog and let them roam the yard then they go outside the 6 foot fence and often are in my front yard. At 8 weeks they still can squeeze out of all kinds of places.

The other chickens (not SFH) all stay in the run, they have plenty of room, food and a compost pile to go thru

I am also working/training the the idiot dog but it is sooooooo frustrating.

I just needed to vent so I do not kill the dog.....sigh
Awwww - so sorry!!!

Here are the 2 beautiful ones I lost, I think I bring the other 2 to Gilmanor to sell.

The boy and girl I might bring to the Gilmanor VA Swap

the idiot I am very frustrated with
Your dog is beautiful and if you do decide to sell, I'd like to "reserve" the pullet if you'd let me.

thanks minihorse and Sheri... that's what my gut said when I plunked down a whole $5 for 'her'... even tho everyone else that day said roo.

so just

that the one that hatched 3 days ago grows strong and is also a pullet. (and doesn't get eaten!)

the coon(s) came back last night. pulled most of 3 2 month old chicks thru the 1x1 wire of their pen and managed to scare another hen off her nest and pull her thru the wire too. (my broody splash cochin).

time to set the trap again... AND lock the babies in their house tonight.
Oh no!!
