Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Some LGD rescue will place a working LGD in a farm home.

I have a mesh fence with barb wire on the top and we watch the girls climb over with ease. When we had the hotwire, they stayed in. Mesh fence with a stand of hotwire on top is ideal.  Search for "LGD Rescue" and email them and tell them your situation.  Put the word out to rescue and LGD breeders. Look on craigslist. There is one out for you, but will have to look for him or her. You will have to pay for one. where do you live?

I actually have two. I have two GP. They are young, but since getting them, we haven't had a single raccoon even stroll by. It's ki4got who was thinking of getting one.

I did try the rescues, and not a one in my area would adopt to a working home and without a mesh fence. Electric was not acceptable at all.

Quote: we've decided to put the idea on hold for now. just keep trapping (more effective than just shooting the ones we see, since we rarely see any. LOL) and sunny is taking care of the ones he finds too...

came in a bloody mess again tonight. no idea what died or where, but he hasn't got a mark on him. so now i'm tired and sore and soggy. with one very bouncy and hyper fuzzmutt that will soon fall asleep. I hope... LOL

i'll find whatever died tomorrow. or whenever it starts to stink.

I was right....my ghoulish dogs did find that bag DH put the rooster that climbed under my car hood and died in and took wayyyy out on our property and disposed of. They brought it back this evening after dinner apparently. I found it when I went out to get the sheets off the line a bit ago. :sick

A little eye candy for the evening. This guy is direct from GFF and is likely a full brother to Bulldogma's Sorenson. I am a little concerned about whether or not he has split wing. He isn't terribly smart, but fast....yes, so I cannot catch him to check (he flies over the fence, so if he has it, it is not interfering with his ability to fly).I saw him mounting two pullets today, but alas, they were moved out to a different coop this evening. His chance, assuming his wings are OK, is coming. I hope they are...I love his coloring.

So far, he has been very gentle. I am hoping he decides to roost on top the coop (no, definitely not bright) tonight so I can catch him and look at his wings. He's about 6 months old, so I should be able to tell now.

Trying to get new photos of my black chickens. They are beautiful. The pullet is a lovely chocolate and black with a good deal of mottling, her brother has feathers so black they look green and the little blue roo is still a lot blue. But these ones are sort of shy, as the older ones pick n them a bit, so photos are hard to come by.

Gah, I am fairly sure Stupid has split wing. I couldn't hang on, spread and count, but it didn't look right. Now I truly wish I hadn't managed to lose his identical brothers :( I had four like him. Bulldogma got one, and the coons got one, and Wasp drove off one, leaving Stupid. Sigh. Without him, I will have a very dark flock, as all my ladies are red variations except for the black one.

I am glad Bulldogma got the one she has....maybe I need to get some eggs!!

Don't feel bad my favorite uncrested roo I have is the same way. I am almost positive he has split wing. He was a early May hatch and is approaching 20ish weeks and I do not see that missing feather growing in at all. I guess out of my third hatch I have a bunch of uncrested roos but none that looked like him or had his personality. I think I might keep him and just not let him breed with the other SFH. I will just let him run with the layers free range.

I like this guy a lot, so I might have to split off the red sex-links from the SFH ladies and let him run with them...time to build another little coop. Sigh. I had been planning to let Stupid and Sol, the other red rooster I have that is gentle, take the pullets and then have two breeding groups.

Wasp has been much, much better, except he did chase hubby the other day, who happened to again be wearing a red shirt. He never bothers hubby otherwise. How very odd IMHO. Hubby won't let me kill the rooster, says it isn't his fault.

I am planning to sell these two Gunnar sons. One will be like his father, mottled and mille fleur. The other one was born without a tail (just got a nub) but has beautiful colors. See pics below.

Mottled, Mille Fleur Roo. This guy is going to be very robust and broad chested. IF I kept him, he would rival his older brother Harley.

Stubby has gold hackles and is blue-based.

Stubby and his hatch mate were hatched on May 26.

Harley

I am willing to re-home Stubby. I am going to the Clearbrook Chickenstock tomorrow just north of Winchester, VA. If I do not sell him or find a home for him, would you be interested?
