Swedish Flower Hen Thread

forgot to say! I had some eggs hatch yesterday. 4 each from Leigh and Walli!

leigh's, I have 3 i'm pretty sure are splash, one golden (mille fleur probably) and walli's I've got 2 penguins and 2 golden.

I am wondering about sexing SFH at about 2 months. I have 6 of them, none showing distinct red in the comb and most are showing deep red blotches in the feathers. Is feather coloring at all a method of sexing the way it is with EEs? I haven't gotten many pictures, but here a few I was able to get this morning:

And 2 close ups of one with a black tuft:

This one was the biggest chick from the beginning but they could be slightly different ages accounting for the early size difference. I had assumed he was a cockerel but no further evidence of that being true:

Does anyone have any other tips for sexing SFHs?

It would be wonderful if you could kindly post pictures of your chicks along with the color name. I have new chicks from Leigh and Walli also, but I have no clue what the colors are called. Hopefully, we can all learn from you. Thanks!!

well, the black and white ones are easy... I call those penguins. LOL. a splash is going to be light grey or pale buff usually, and the golden brown ones usually end up mille fleur patterned.

sorry, I don't have many pics. I do of a couple old hatches but no splash or black and whites... most of gunnar's chicks (the ones I do have pics of) were usually mille fleur pattern.

what i'm calling a penguin... white belly black back

classic mille fleur coloration

these 3 were also mille fleur. one is my current roo.

Cool, thanks. What if I have a blonde chick from Leigh?
What are those called and what will she be colored?
White?

blonde would be the buff I mentioned probably, and likely going to be splash based with a mille fleur pattern possibly.

because of the wide variations in colors, predicting what chicks will look like is always guesswork regardless... so just enjoy watching them change daily until they're about old enough to breed. 8)

I have a couple new babies I arrived home to find this evening. I got eggs from another BYCer, and the first lot got lost in the mail. The second lot suffered some PO oddities. Then the broody hen quit at lockdown (granted, she sat for 39 days) and I found the eggs all cold one morning! So getting two is surprising. One is an EExSFH cross, a little strawberry blonde, and one is a PB red.

Moving all my flocks within a flock around this upcoming weekend, and then I'll start saving eggs sometime in October.

One of my SFH lays huge eggs.

I've got 4 SFH boys if anyone is interested. One is red/blue uncrested, one is mille fleur crested, the others i don't remember but will take pictures tomorrow or the next day.
