Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Our new breeding pens are total open air with just a roof... the back hatch 2' up is plywood, but that's it.
That said, I have clear vinyl with Velcro to cover each section of wire in the winter... let's light in, but breaks the wind.
The reason for my original question was that I expect these new breeding pens will not be quite as warm (probably by 10 degrees or so) as the inside coops. In previous years everyone has been inside, but this year I will have birds in the 4 outside pens.
If you have any photos of how you did your vinyl I'd love to see them.

snapped a picture of my almost-to-point-of-lay pullet this afternoon -- it's been pointed out that the "flowers" on her breast look like little hearts...
Yes! I see them!

Such a pretty kiddo :D

I thought I'd share a video of the "teenagers" that I have decided on to add to my breeding program. I let them out to free range in the afternoons, and I love the way they "play" when they come out of their pen!
Good to see you and the video! Still lovin' that black. Leigh also has a chocolate that's amazing.

We just received 11 SFH chicks from GF. I'm so pleased to see how beautiful your birds are! I'm especially hoping for some red ones like yours. Absolute beauties!

Quote: Well... intended to get some of the vinyl up tonight since it's suppose to freeze tonight for the first time.
But... making sure everyone had shelter, grass, hay, water, etc before the freeze hit meant I copped out... tossed a tarp up over the end of the new pens where I have 2 cockerels. LOL
So... hopefully will get some vinyl done tomorrow and will take pics...

2 of my 3 pullets started this week at 24 weeks. The 1 uncrested pullet had not started yet but her comb is starting to redden so it shouldn't be to long.

Again, my darling man had applied for a position out of state. this time in Washington state. He's getting an in person interview with this one. Anyone here from there? Or in Skagit County or adjacent?

Wow...Washington sounds really cold to me...

Hey..remember our "driving map" for driving eggs or chicks cross country so we didn't have to ship?

Well..... who all is between Leigh (Bulldogma) and Northern Indiana? Next spring I want some eggs or chicks from one of her girls and don't want to use the mail.

My wife is from Grays Harbor Co. near Olympia. My inlaws were in Malone, and were in the same climate zone (7) as us in Atlanta. The high and low temps are similar, but it's cooler longer, and wet. It is beautiful! East of the Cascades it drops to Zones 3 & 4.
