Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I have looked for the collars but can't find them. They could buy me more time in choosing a candidate for surgery.

They were talking about them on the Nor. Cal thread - here is the email provided: [email protected]

They are three strips of velcro attached to a stretchable fabric cloth. Here is a link for when they were being shown and talked about: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/25/california-northern/35690#post_12536347

I think the creator was sharing how to make them earlier on in the thread.. so if she doesn't have them made she may give you instructions on how to make them yourselves.

Just wanted to share my rather unusually colored 11-week old pullet. She's almost a leopard print Mille Fleur. Her red is muted to almost yellow, the white is dominant and the black makes for a striking contrast.
Unfortunately the photos don't do her coloring justice... Anyone else have one like this??

very cool. I would say she carries the dilute gene. it mutes red but doesn't affect black. same thing that makes mahogany red into golden buff. (without the mahogany, the red fades to a lighter gold).

have you guys noticed aggression with your roosters?

that's what we've been discussing the last page or so. LOL some people have, some haven't...

the birds I got from someone else, she got rid of them because she had aggressive roosters, but the youngsters I got were all totally friendly. one roo died because of it (stepped on by a horse) the other was sold (won't breed crested to crested and I liked my crested girl better LOL). my current roo is very sweet too and unaggressive and I know of several others that have been rehomed who are now flock guardians that are just as nice as can be too.

I've had SFH roos challenge me. When it happens I go after them with a cane and don't back down until they are running away from me. Usually that's all it takes with these guys. A lot of adolescent roos will test, but with immediate correction, most never try again.

I have had SFH roos that were sweethearts in their younger days and then become very testy as they matured. This one blue-based roo decided to fling his wing and chase after me one day. Since he did not back off and kept pushing at me, one gentle kick to his chest sent him scurrying for escape. He has never pushed that hard again. I just take a step toward him and he is off and running.

I haven't had a cock/cockerel test me yet (knock on wood) but I do have fun with them on occasion, just to remind them who is boss.

I have an old, old floppy trench coat that I put on to feed in the mornings before leaving for work. It's mainly to keep my work clothes clean, but it also makes a great imitation wingspan. When anyone starts to get underfoot (not good at O dark hundred in snow and ice) I put my hands in the pockets and flap the sides of the coat like a chicken flaps its wings to get lift to spur. Sends them scurrying to observe from a safe distance every time. I can pick up any hen, squawking at the top of her lungs without a challenge from any rooster deciding to be a hero. So far, so good. The first one that tries lands in the larder.
