Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Received 2 boxes of SFH eggs today and setting them tomorrow. I'm so excited.

You will be very happy I have had all kinds of chickens and the SFH are my favorites and I have only had them a short period of time. They are so tame, even tamer than my large fowl dark brahmas. The colors are stunning as well good luck I hope you hatch them all.

LOL - one of the few times a person can buy spoiled chicken, and rave about it!

But it's so true - especially if you spend time with them. They are just the neatest birds!

Yeah it is to the point now when they see me I have to move them back with my hand to keep from stepping on them. I would rather them be that way then be mean any day! Leigh I am getting 6 older SFH in April from Celtic Oaks Farm as well (2 cockerels) (4 pullets) They will be around 4 months old and I figured I could breed them into the ones from you. You and Karen are more than welcome to some of them if you all ever need an outcrossing from new blood. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in the future.

I'm good for now, I've got birds from 4 sources... 2 girls from Alabama (she no longer has them) 1 roo from kytinpusher, a pullet from wildhorseannie and the rest from Leigh. currently breeding are the AL girls (blues, 1 crested), and a mille and roo from leigh (both black based)

One of my SWF roosters is on his way out to live elsewhere or the stew pot. He has a curled toe so he was going to get to live free range out of breedng pens. But for the last 2 months he attacks whoever goes in to feed, water, etc. He has tried 2x to get me comming feet first at me. Those were his last chances. Next time one of us leaves the coop alive and I plan on that being me. I have very little paticence for this kind of behavior.

Ok it was just a friendly offer.

And you should not tolerate that behavior. It would be likely that he would pass on his aggressiveness to his progeny. I have a Basque cockerel that felt so good about dethroning the flock lead SFH rooster that he decided that he could take me on as well. I tried holding him down and walking around with him to no avail. So this back up boy is destined for the roaster. Just waiting until it warms up a bit outside before the deed is done.

Sounds great! And I can hatch eggs from your flock for you, too!

and appreciated... just saying my flock is pretty mixed, with 1 totally unrelated (within several generations at least) and the same for 3 of the girls... so as long as I pair them up correctly I should be good for at least a few years before I have to start back-crossing.

another reason to pick girls that look very different from each other. less likelihood that they're closely related to each other. it's not a guarantee, but the chances are better...
