Swedish Flower Hen Thread

good luck with that... (shipping to the states)...

I'm working on getting Dorking eggs imported from England, and it's going to be several thousand dollars with the testing, fees, permits, etc. just for what will amount to one very large hatch of chicks (hopefully). almost $1000 for just the testing on the English flock, not to mention the rest of the fees, plus the shipping costs.
Yeah, I was mostly joking. Think it would be easier from here though, since we don't really have Salmonella or Newcastle disease, and poultry/livestock hygiene is among the best in the world.

Vehve - once you have some good Finnish bloodlines going, the folks to contact are Greenfire Farms here in the US. They specialize in the importation of rare breeds.

Thank you everyone for the welcome.

It's much appreciated.

I wasn't able to get hold of the guy here inb town who raises the SFH but, I'm going tot try again after 5pm tomorrow as I don't know if he works or not. I am however, greatly looking forward to seeing about getting some of his lovely birds. He has the speckled ones and they just look so darn cute.! lol

I keep going back and forth on whether I want to use my duplex coop to have the sultan and polish on one side and my silver lace wyandottes on the other, but, the more i hear about the flower hens the more I want to chuck the idea of fluffy for sfh breeding. I have the funny feeling that I will be going for the latter because they are also a heritage breed and we have to keep the numbers up. In my case they are a dual heritage breed : mine and the birds themselves.

Glad to be here and happy I can learn more about these lovely little birds.

Sincerely,
Jodi

Good afternoon everyone. Had a very good hatch from Bulldogma's eggs. 28 from 40 shipped. 20 are going to their new home today. This was an order I took prior to my rooster passing. I'd like some input on what color chicks I should keep in order to have the best chance of getting a "snow leopard". I'm at work so don't have pics. The majority of the chicks have medium brown bodies with lighter brown heads. Thanks!

That's awesome!!

Near as I can tell, this is a picture of Snoleopard when she was a chick. She had the regular black-based mille fleur coloration but the red was more muted - a bit more yellowish/gold instead of red. It's most noticeable on the head and shoulders... black with blonde instead of red highlights. LOL!
Hope you get a Snoleopard!!

Thank you! Bulldogma's eggs were awesome!

I also put them in my new Dickey and I was very happy with its performance. I'll go through them after supper and see if I have any possibles. There are a few light ones that I'll be keeping as well.

Hmm... I would have guessed it was one of the light colored chicks.

puglady - the yellowy ones will be red/white and the very light ones are Ali's chicks... my "Super-Friendly" line. LOL! What they lack in color they seem to make up for in personality and friendliness! I've had a lot of people report back and confirm that their Ali chicks are some of the friendliest they've ever had.

So thrilled you got such an amazingly good hatch!
