Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Beautiful, sweet, curious and lovable SFH cockrel needs a new home. We hatched Rowen from Greenfire stock in March. He has been absolutely delightful. So sweet, so curious, sometimes too curious as he is often underfoot when we try to work in the coop but I'll take that over a nasty aggressive roo. I would love to keep this pretty little guy but we already have a silkie rooster who the kids are pretty attached to and I'm not sure the neighbors could take TWO roosters living under their bedroom windows! So Rowen needs a good home where someone can appreciate his unique qualities. We live in the monroe/Woodinville area of Washington. If you are interested and live anywhere near us or know someone who does please let me know. I am willing to do a little driving to get him to a good home.

well, not the greatest pic, or pose (he was preening), but this is my youngest sfh... definitely a roo tho.
from eggs picked up at Gilmanor (sorry I don't remember who's they were. do you Leigh?)

oh and some disappointing news... not bad, just disappointing. one of the horses decided to walk into the pen I had my sfh in. who are now once again free.

anyone want a 28 year old blind horse?
Silly horse! This heat is too yucky to do too much chicken chasing in!
The eggs were from Jeanne Hovedon (sp?) who isn't on BYC unfortunately. She has some very nice birds.

Here's my new boy (finally!) Picked him up last weekend from Marcia. He is a Bazinga (?) son, 13.5 weeks old. Splash pyle I believe - he as a few gray feathers in that white. I'm going to call him Sheldor. He doesn't appear to be crested, but that's okay, he'll compliment my crested gals. Now I have every color --- I think :)

He's just been let out to range with the flock for feeding time and is still a little shy. Tends to stick close to me and run from any of the bigger chickens. Doesn't mind the young ones though.
Congrats! He's beautiful! (I'm partial to that coloring myself.)

Can I just say? My Swedish Flower Hens are smarter than any of my other breeds.

Sorenson is a very clever boy indeed! (No one else has figured out his secret to his amazing coolness!)

Try to find a couple of small battery run beeping toys. or those that activate upon motion. If the horse hears them he will avoid walking into the pen. Is he your only horse? You might get him a seeing eye pony or a goat wether. It has worked for other people's blind horses.

I love how he is getting a red crest! His twin brother isn't getting that. And how clever is that...standing next to the fan. His brother is not nearly as clever. He escaped the pen today and had the hardest time figuring out how to go through the open gate. I need to post a new photo of my little blue rooster. He is the most beautiful bird. I'm considering building a pen just for him and a couple girls...I'd be heartbroken if I lost him. The other rooster I got at the same time is definitely a black -- he has that green tint to his feathers -- and I can't wait to see his mottling pattern. On egg watch. I'm pretty sure one should be laying. But it is so hot she might have decided to wait. Or she may be as rogue as my EE hen and only lay in some wild, random spot.

SHE... and I have her daughter (also equally destructive, but to fences LOL) and 2 mini boys who help her figure out where she is... Grace has been blind for over 15 years now. she knows exactly where she is, she just smells that heavenly chicken feed and HAS to get it. so now the feeder is inside the house rather than the pen. and it's repaired (again)... my 2 miniature boys decided they wanted in last year, so it's seen better days.

so now I've got the trio AND the little mille girl in there. decided it would be too crowded with a second juvenile roo, (for now). so the countdown for pure eggs starts today again. LOL you should have seen me playing musical chickens at 630 this morning... take a cochin out, put a swede in, take another cochin out, put a swede in... you see a pattern here? had to look for babygirl, she was back in with the other youngsters, after having graduated to the horse trailer previously. nobody was where they belonged. and Tannish, one of my red dorking girls, has decided she doesn't like to sleep with the other chickens again. caught her roaming around this morning when I got up. she's going broody again I think, somewhere up next to the house. (under our cluttered deck likely).

Something got into the trash last night, which is a good reminder to keep my defenses strong. Deck is a nasty mess though. One of my SFH pullets scares me. She doesn't seem to care she could be dinner for a wild animal but tries to roost outside. I almost missed her last night, and she raced out first thing this morning.

Once the furloughs for DoD employees are over (taking 20% of our income...ouch) and we sell the other house (been trying for a while) I am thinking of adding an electric perimeter to the bottom of my fences. It would help keep a dog in and predators out.

Don't count it... yes, it will keep lgd's in. But it doesn't keep predators out. But a good lgd will take care of any predator that does get in.
Predators are cunning and fast. And electric "pulses". They can frequently be quick enough to avoid a shock.

The mesh is what I'm talking about, although I can add several wide and low lines to my fences, which are already set up to keep horses in. But if it keeps an LGD in, any predators thatget in won't matter. A friend of mine has an LGD and hasn't lost but one bird since adding him 5 years ago.

If I added the electric mesh, I could also keep in goats, to hubby's disgust. LOL.

Already planning to electrify the garden fence to keep pigs in to plow for me over the winter.

Quote: they do make a steady charge fence charger... and the trick is, put 2 strands close enough together that he has to hit both. make one grounded the other hot. then he's sure to get a good solid 'knock the snot out of him' jolt. LOL (hubby's terminology)

that works especially well if it's on a fence or dry ground where the critter may not be well grounded. if he's not grounded then the shock won't bother him. where if he has to go between 2 wires, it'll go in from one wire and out the other
