Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Woohoo! I hatched 8 new babies! Half are from Bulldogma and half are from
KYtinpusher. Looks like most of them are pullets by looking at the wing feathers.
Good thing, since almost all of the 6 chicks from Greenfkre are gonna be roosters.
Don't think I'll do business with them again.
I have a question. How early can you tell if a bird is going to be crested?

I see crests beginning as soon as two weeks on many. Others were a bit slower and were sprouting by 3 wks. So I would say two to 3 wks you could see the earliest hint if you were really paying attention. I had a rooster that I hatched who was a bit small to begin with. His hatchmates had their crests beginning by 2 to 3 wks, but he was about a week later on getting his but then he was sort of behind from the get go.

I have at least half pullets in my GFF chicks but I didn't come out so well on non crested. I had wanted non crested but out of 20, only 7 are apparently non crested! :( Hopefully I don't have any late sprouters!

Yes, it looks like I have a bunch of crested roosters.
I also prefer no crested. I might have to start crested and non crested pens!
LOL. (What's just one more run!)

personally I don't recommend breeding crest to crest, because of the chance of getting huge crests and vaulted skulls... IMO it's counter-productive to being a good free range bird, if it can't see above or behind itself.

most of my crested chicks start developing their crests between 4-6 weeks old... for sfh or my ee's or any other crosses with crested birds.
the GFF SF I just got started showing crests as soon as a couple of week. I am not talking about anything of significance but you could see the fluff on the top of the head starting to stand up as the feathers there were beginning to develop. All those that showed this are developing crests. The ones that stayed smooth are not. You have to be really paying attention to them to see it coming in this early but it was there. In older chicks I have that started out same, they were about a month old before you had an obvious crest but they still showed this hint of a crest pretty early.

Hi everyone- I've been lurking, trying to read back through about 3 months of posts. I have 3 SFH pullets (from straight run) who are almost 16 weeks old. Two of the three's combs are starting to develop and turn pink/red.

I have some BLRW too but I have decided to stick with the SFH

Here are a few pictures of my girls

^ Stripe-- who apparently doesn't like our miniature dachshunds

^ Our friendly Partridge-- she does like our dogs and loves to watch what we are doing. Where we are, she is close by, watching

^ Our camera shy Penguin. This is the best picture I could get of her. She is usually preening or digging for grubs

Don't mind the names-- DH named Strip and Penguin. I started calling Partridge that because she had partridge feathers as a chick. She is so curious!
