Swedish Flower Hen Thread

So what is it about blue? Is there some kind of color discrimination?

Interesting thing I read the other day in a book. It said that the birds with the smaller combs tend to fall closer to the bottom of the pecking order. This was speaking specifically of a flock of HENS (it had other things to say about the roosters).

Until I got the SFH my EEs were at bottom of flock. Smallest combs of the bunch.

Now both of my Blues have been the bottom of their generation in pecking order. Both of them had crests. Both of their combs are kind-of "hidden" in those crests.

I wonder if that may be part of their issue?

Oh...and Leigh... that comb size could be a point in your flock. The SFH in that group of birds you list would definitely have the most visible and "largest" combs.

ETA: Except for the sex links I imagine. I forgot them.

Interesting point! I have also noticed that birds of certain colors are more likely to stick together if they are from the same age group. Interesting observation - I have a number of black/dark birds that are higher in the pecking order. Since putting my black EE in with them, she has risen in status. My white SFH tends to prefer MY company... wonder if its because I'm so stinkin' pale? LOL!

And my Blues are the palest birds in the flock. Stick out like a sore thumb. I better get some more - but darker blues and darker colors. When You coming to Indiana?

When you coming to Virginia? LOL!

You need to find someone up there who can hatch for you so I can send you some of Marta's eggs. I also have Marta's younger sister (black) growing out. She should start laying in the March/April time frame hopefully.

I do have a person that would hatch. I've just never had luck with shipped eggs.

I do think they'd do better in an incubator, though. Maybe I'll contact her.
