Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Something or someone got my Swedish flowers I'm pretty disappointed in the situation out of all 10 together just my two flowers gone. Feathers enough for one but no blood and not enough for both of em... I've looked an looked all over its been two days now. Any ideas on finding a scared chicken in heavy brush and thorns?

That's terrible! I am sorry to hear it. I know a scared chicken will hide silently. But if they are able to.... they will come back if they know it as home already, once the coast is clear. I am glad your others are ok.

Wishful thinking.... maybe they both went broody?

Have you tried posting in the predators section? You may get better information there.

It's ALWAYS the one we like they get first.

Wish I could be more help.... If you don't get answers over there, pm me and I will try to help brainstorm what little I do know.

Good luck!

One was my cockrel Jonah hex I've posted in this thread, other was a crested hen. Ima set out a live trap and see what I get. My wife's father thinks someone stole em but I'm on the fence about that I think a criter got the hen then the rooster tried to defend em but doesn't make sense it was both of them and not my welsummers or jubilee orps.

Sorry for your loss. It does seem odd that just the flowers are gone. As a predator, I would go after the bigger, slower orps. Did the two keep themselves separate from the others?

No not at all actually the cockrel was head of the pen over the welsummer and jubilee cockrels I have and the fastest and most athletic ones out of the crowd. I set up a live trap last night and nothing so far, the situation kinda makes me mad.

I agree it's strange. So, questions... What time of day did they disappear? Where were they when this happened? Usually the other chickens will act strange if they've had a predator scare, like avoiding the area it was. What type of area do you live in? What type of fencing and coop? When there are only feathers, maybe a cat of some kind, though they won't usually go after full grown birds. What kind of trap are you setting and what are you baiting it with? Dogs would have killed the whole flock and left the bodies behind. Different raptors have different MO's. And that doesn't sound like weasel, raccoon, opossum, or anything I can think of. There should be more evidence. Seems like more evidence would be around if it were a mountain lion or bobcat as well. All though I see your location, I don't know the area to give better suggestions.

I probably would have taken the Jubilee.

If it was a predator and not a thief, they WILL be back for another meal. But for 2 birds to disappear at once..... Maybe a family of hawks or something like that, who's teaching their young to hunt.

Have you posted to CL or facebook in the lost animal section and maybe indicate they could have been taken? We have had luck with those communities, even in finding animals that became deceased already. but even then, it's good to have closure. Honestly, in your shoes, I would probably think about it non stop until I had resolution. And talk about suspicion every time I saw someone walk by! Did your roo crow? Maybe post like "new crowing in your neighborhood" and offer a small reward like $25. Also, you might be checking the farm and garden section on CL to see if someone is trying to sell them. If I was posting for them, I would do... farm & garden, pets, and lost and found sections of CL. Sounds like theft if they took a male and a female SFH!

So check every chicken ad you see. Dang losers!

Sometimes when you set a trap it may take a few day before they hit it because it is something new in the environment so they are cautious. But once it's a regular sight they may try. Just be aware that if they get trapped and somehow make it out, they will then be wise about it. Are you prepared to dispense of the predator if you do catch one, by a means other than relocation which is ALWAYS a bad idea and illegal in most locations?

Note, this is an ongoing, learning process for me as well. So as much as I try not to spread misinformation, if there is something I confused or misrepresented, kindly let me know please... to all posters.

Rooting for you and your flock!

@Lamancha Any chance your gonna sell off any those females? I do have a male that is mostly white with black flowers and some cream color going on if that's the snow leopard style you mentioned. He is not one of my keepers so far just because I thought he was a girl for so long. But I am going to make a point chart to help me pick before I make a final decision. It's good to have choices.

I probably have enough for breeding, so I'm not sure why I ask other than maybe a having a huge variety.

Coyote. Got 15 of my chickens and not a feather anywhere. I was kinda thinking alien abduction until I saw him one day.

I live in the mountains of nc very bushy and out in the sticks. See we had a outside dog but we figured he needed a better life inside a home and it wasn't a day later it happen. I haven't a clue as to time I let my older flock of 12 out all day everyday and not a one of them went missing, but they were all there that morning cause I feed them twice a day. I noticed my young welsummer was acting all anxious running fence back and forth.

Anyway I've been looking on CL and local sites that do poultry and haven't found anything. I also do not have or use Facebook , As far as how I'll get rid of a predator well that'll be between me and my boom sticks unless it's a pet I catch then I'll take it to the owner and let them know the deal.

Thanks for all y'alls advice its much appreciated.
