Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Is it possible to tell whether thy'll have poofs on their heads as chicks? If not how soon can you tell?

I will hatch but only for replacements. I also have a BCF (best chicken friend) that I trade hens with. She has the SLW's and the RIR roo. I have the Dels and BR's and now these.

I may just have to buy a plucker and give it to a friend who will do the job for me. We have a new freezer that's only half full.

I'm getting hatching eggs, I'm getting hatching eggs, I'm getting hatching eggs!!!

I had one SFH egg hatch out of 12 I set.. by some miracle I ended up with what is feathering out to be a blue/orange/cream colored pullet with white feather tips.. She has a crest, and I could tell immediately when she was fluffed and out of the bator.. I put her in the brooder with my other day olds, and it was obvious there was a crest there. She's now 6 weeks, and the crest is HUGE!!

I think selling eggs depends on how many I get and if anybody wants them. It's either that or eat them! I do plan on hatching my own chicks and also trading hatching eggs with a couple people in the spring.

I'm really excited about that.

Here is a picture of a couple of my 7-week old SFH along with BR and BCM of the same age. The SFH are as big and maybe slightly bigger than the other breeds. I think they're growing fast, but I am new to this, too.

As for being excited, I am more excited about the SFH feathering out because I don't already know what they're going to look like, so it is fun to see them grow and change.

Except for some minor variations, I already know how the BR and BCM are going to turn out.

I will post some later, but logged in to ask a question. (I"m not feeling good right now)

I got the newsletter from GF and it talks about bringing in new stock for the Legbars.

Now I wonder if they do the same with the SFH's. I got all my chicks from the same person. Should I wait and buy some from GF or someone else? I don't want to inbreed.

Thanks,

Rancher
