Mr. Crooked Toes is definitely a he. Whatever breed he is he is Blue Wheaten, the way he has feathered out is how the boys do. The hens are a pretty wheat color. He almost looks like a Cubalaya to me? I'd say he's definitely not a SFH.

Well I received an e-mail from the seller which I think was nice. Mr. Crooked toes is in fact a Montgomery Blue Traveler. I've never heard of them til now. As you can see he is friendly enough and I've taken to him. Though I'm not a pet chicken person. He stands and gets around just fine. In fact he feathered out quickly. There are some up for sale on rarebreeds auction if your interested.

As for the crooked toes these things happen and the seller has been nice about it. What can you do, these things happen. I'm to old to worry about it.

Has anyone other than myself had any issues with "deformed" wings. I purchased my second hatch SFH's from a reputable seller on eBay. 7 of the 12 hatched but one has a strange growth on his/her wings. The flesh on the wings seperates likes fingers and is feathering.

I recieved my first batch of SF Hen chicks on Feb. 1st. Here are head shots at 21/2 weeks old. Any guesses on which are roos? I think #2 Grayish one is a hen, #6 the only one with a crest is a hen and #8 the last one is a hen. It's been a long time since I raised chicks. At what age will I know for sure? #5 yellow with blk. spot on top of head and #7 Red one are both acting more dominant like roosters, too. Thanks for your input. hope to learn a lot about this breed from all you other SFH fanciers. Thanks!

I'm thinking #3 and #4 and maybe #8 may also turn out to be crested. Most of the crests should appear by about 4 weeks. The crested roos usually take longer to express themselves than the non-crested - some not until 8 or 9 weeks. #'s 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 look like they are possibly roos to me, but it is still a little early.

NW Chick Gal, I could tell which of mine were cockerels at 10 days when they arrived. Six of them had bigger combs than the other three. They are now six months old and every one of those six babies with the bigger comb is a gorgeous guy! I do think you have quite a few beautiful boys there, too. I couldn't tell which had crests, though, until they were about 3 weeks old and their head feathers started to sprout and stand straight up. I didn't get any tiny babies with poofy heads as others I have seen pictures of.

8 or 9 wks, I think. I will take better pictures of them but needed help with Mr. Crooked toes as he will be called. At least until I decide what to do with him. He walks fine and seems to hold his own among the others.
