Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I am a new Swedish Flower Hen owner! Four chicks! Here are pictures of two. I know the brownish one is a typical look, and I have two of those, one sort of caramel colored with darker patches, and this lighter pretty one! The picture didn't capture her creamy color, and two-toned head, with two darker yellow patches on the body. This brown one got tail feathers w/in a week, but at 4 weeks now, seems to have a comb! What should I think? These are two-week old photos.
I am so excited!

OK, photo update on the Swedes. They are so very friendly! They, the Icelandics, and the lone Cream Legbar girl are the oneS who come sit on my lap for treats! I call them the Nordic Tribe!
Here is the "Bronze", the Blond, the Bronze and the Brown#1 and below Brown #2.

I got way too many cockerels so my white and red crested SFH cockerel, Peanut, went in with my egg flock that includes a sweet little blue Ameraucana that has a lavender dad. I saved and incubated some of her pretty blue eggs and this is one of the chicks:

I was hoping to get beards, muffs AND crests and in this one, I did. Looks to be another little cockerel. He is 6 weeks old.
He/she is adorable!!! For some reason I thought you where using Wheaten AM. Cute! I wanted to ask now that you have been hatching SFH for a while, how soon have you been able to tell the gender of the chicks and have you been able to feather sex at hatch at all? Any other clues to look for?

That first batch I hatched (now 7 weeks) had no wheaten eggs in it. The later batches did. The chicks with the wheaten/blue wheaten mommas were all tan and brown chipmunk striped but not identical to each other. Their father was my big crested mille fleur patterned guy with the crooked toes. (He did not/will not not pass the bad toes on. Starting at about 6 months he became aggressive to the point of being an attack chicken. At 8 1/2 months he was a bit tough but still delicious. The same goes for Achmed who is in the crock pot right now. I still have 4 cockerels from the original batch and lots of replacements.)

The oldest batch with the wheaten/blue wheaten Ameraucana moms is now 5 weeks old. Most are feathering out a beautiful fawn color with dark highlights. Some have crests, some have muffs and beards and at least one has both. :)

I tried feather sexing but really couldn't tell anything. Probably just me. Like the first ones I bought from GF most of the males combs seem to grow really fast. For me that is the easiest way to tell.

Congratulations! I got mine just a few months ago and they have quickly become some of my favorites! They are packed with personality. :)

So excited! I have 8 SFH chicks on order from GF. They will ship. 6/5.

Congrats. on your order from GF. My SFH chickens I got from A and J Farm are now 14 weeks old and all feathered out and gorgeous. I have 6 roosters, 3 of which are already crowing. My 2 hens are very unique. One is a very soft pewter color with white tips on the feathers and brassy gold neck feathers and much smaller than the mahogany and black hen , my only crested one. We call her Helga and she is a bit timid compared to the rest of the flock. Maybe the crest obstructs vision a bit? It's not nearly as full as some I've seen in others photos.

They are very curious and love to investigate whatever you are doing. None have attempted to fly over the six foot high vertical board fence around their outdoor pen. Hopefully, they will stay put as just last week I spotted a grey wolf in our backyard. I think he was more interested in my goats but they are fenced in very well.

Was wondering when to expect my hens to start laying?

That first pic of your roo is priceless! He looks like a cartoon character, that expression on his face! Mine are only four weeks old, but I have found them to be so expressive, intense, and full of personality.....one especially. I love the way they change every day - their coloring, etc. So fun to raise. Thanks for sharing your pics!

I finally got around to taking some photos of my Swedish Flower Hens. They are 12 weeks old now. I ended up with 4 roosters and 3 pullets. They are really great chickens! I have also found them to be very friendly, and so curious about anything around them. I have two EE's the same age, all hatched and raised together, but the EE'S will hide while the Sweds cluster together at the fence to check it out. Too funny! Still hopeing to get some darker ones, but met a guy this week who has mostly light ones who hatched a black chick, so there is hope!

Wow! They look so good! I wish that I had hatched some light ones, all mine are dark! Maybe after they start laying we can trade some eggs
