Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Oh my goodness, good luck to those of you expecting some of the worst of that Sandy!
I used to live in Florida. Remember hiding under the house when there was a hurricane coming. We would open all of the windows in the house, and go under a crawl space. We didn't have any where else to go. Once after having to do this, came out of the crawl space, back into the house, to see every thing really messed up. Even the coffee table and small chairs had been moved. We would always go into town to see how far the water came into town this time around. We live in Fernandina Beach.
So, I hope you have safe places to go. And yes, generators are great things to have on hand. We have one. Used it when we had our trailer. Now it's a great storage item. Need to keep it checked, run it once and a while, and make sure there is fresh gas in it.

Can you feather sex SFH? If so I think all 3 of mine are hens

Yes - feather sexing works very well for most SHFs... but... I'm just finding out that one of my pullets is a cockerel. S/he was a late bloomer and crested which makes me wonder if crested birds may feather sex differently than non-crested birds. My non-crested birds both were true as far as feather sexing. The crested boy was a late bloomer in all ways. Almost died as a chick.

Well, I recandled everything this afternoon, so it's day 8-9 (I set them last Friday night) and the clears are clears. Le sigh. I'm hanging onto hope for these 6 that did develop.

We are nailing down everything we can't fit in the garage. Our generator was stolen too about 6 weeks ago. So I had to load buckets and things with extra water for the animals. I have water stored for people drinking. When the winds start up tonight, I'll fill the tubs so we can flush the toilets (well/septic) in case of power outage. The neighbors say it's rare to lose power here, but when it does, we are last in the state to get it back. Worst case is we go to our old house and pick up water (gravity fed well there; we always had water).

I was in a panic about the chicken eggs. I made DH dig around and find the power inverter and go buy a new car battery. He thinks I am crazy. So I can save the eggs. We won't have water, septic, heat or a way to cook other than the outdoor grill, but the eggs will be be fine.

But the models are saying we might get snow on top of lots of rain and wind. Yuck.

I hope you and your eggs fare well over the coming days. Just in case, someone on another thread suggested using baked potatoes wrapped in foil (and a towel) inside the bator to help keep it warm. You can cook baked potatoes on your grill.
