Swedish Flower Hen Thread

:hugs I can't believe none of them hatched! :barnie  If I get my NPIP by spring, I'll be happy to hatch some for you and send them. I'll probably be setting some for the NYD Hatch-a-long (don't tell DH  )

LOL, mine is all, "No More Hatching."

Well, maybe not....until spring, lol. I'm hopeful the Silkies and Cochins will be laying eggs by then. I

I would certainly pay good money to buy SFH chicks from someone I know.

I hope I found a home for one of these darn roos. This guy was looking at chicken stuff in TSC today while we were there buying chicken feed, we got to talking, and turns out he needs a rooster. I basically said, come take your pick, other than my Swedes and Cochins. None are aggressive. Hope he messages me. Feather sexing of the new babies does not make me hopeful, lol.

Hi everyone! I haven't been on in a while. Here are some pics of my SFHs! I was wondering if anyone has had a SFH with a weird comb? I am not familiar with comb types but it almost looks like three rows of comb.

1. gender unknown hatched from shipped eggs

2. Probable pullet from Papa Brooder

3.Gender unknown cream and red from shipped eggs

4. gender unknown about a week younger than the probable pullet. Also from Papa Brooder.

5. This one has a strange comb and was hatched from shipped eggs at the same time as chicks in pics 1 and 3. It also has had slower development and problems with pasty butt.

6. Probable rooster from Papa Brooder.

7. just for fun a silkie from Papa Brooder.

Great pics!

So I was outside staring at my chickens (I know it's not polite, but they're hilarious!

) and I've started noticing that my boy SFH (the ones that are showing larger combs) even at a few weeks old are significantly bigger than the suspected girls. Anyone else notice this? I haven't feather sexed any of my hatches yet, I will be doing that when I start hatching out my own - since most of my shipped hatches have had difficulties hatching, i didn't mess with the babies for a few days.

I thought I would share this. I have an EE named Jewel. She had a sister and they were always together. Well when they were about 4 months old the sister got eaten by something and Jewel was just lost. She would always wander around by herself. The other chickens would pick on her. I had thought about getting rid of her, but I just loved her so much. One day I noticed she was just following me around the yard whenever I was out there. That was a couple months ago. After that, she started letting me and the kids pet her. The other day I was out there taking pics of my crazy birds and she jumped up on my shoulder and was just chattering in my ear. She was telling me all about it! Like she had missed 6 months of therapy! Now when I'm out there, she normally is riding around on my shoulder (like a parrot!). When I get the 'Sacred White OU Treat Cup', she hops up there and eats out of the cup instead of eating the treats off the ground. Since she's been so social toward me and the kids, my SFH have started becoming super social with people. They're always super sweet, but if you want to pet one or hold one they would always shy away. Not now tho. It's great. I always wondered what it was like to have chickens that were as tame as I've read about on here. Now I know. It's great!

Just had to share my AWSOME Chicken moment!

yep looks pretty sure for two pullets and a roo. Nice to see pics! Does #2 have the blue coloring? My hen that looks like that has been laying (only one out of my SFHs so it's a good chance for me to see what kind of chicks she throws. Glad your chickies are doing well!

Papa Brooder, that blue one with the different comb looks to be crested. Their combs look like that. The crested birds tend to develop slower, or at least some of my roos did.

Hey Peoples. been several days since I had anything to say. Sometimes I go a week or more not saying things. Of course I live alone way in the backwoods of North Florida and don't get to town much.
Anyway I my 3 pullets have been laying for a couple months or so, I put some eggs in the incubator, I think was 14. had several clears, all seemed to be from same girl. I ended up with 10 in lockdown I got four chicks. I had 2 that almost hatched. 2 were light and 2 dark. The light chicks have what seems to be blue tint down their backs. The darks seem to be dark drown with some reddish. I put them out in the brooder yesterday and when I checked on them just before dark they was bouncing around in there.
My 2 chicks I hatched from BEHEP's eggs are growing up nicely. I'll try to get a picture of them today. Thinking the dark/white smooth head is a girl. The red/white crested , maybe girl also.
Here the new ones just after I took out of hatch box on their way to brooder.
BTW I move the 2 older ones outside under the shed. I have several cages under it, all off the ground. I use them for my rabbits, quail and as grow out pens for my chicks after they feather out.
I have 10 more eggs going to lockdown Friday.

Are you sure this one is SFH?? I've never seen one start out with this coloring... and it seems to have barring as opposed to flowering. I sure could be wrong because I haven't seen everything yet, but this chick just strikes me as a little... off. Anyone else ever see one with this coloring??

Definitely SFH and definitely a cockerel! He's very pretty!!

Bulldogma, #1. looks like one I got a while back. The seller still won't admit that it's not a pure SFH... :/
It may have had some SFH in it, but it's not pure. She's a character though and now enjoys a great life in my friends first ever flock.
