SWOLLEN EYE? my hen needs some help (PICS)

Aww I am sorry for your poor birds. It breaks my heart to see animals sick, they have no idea what's going on

It's probably caused by a peck in the eye or mabye they scratch there eyes on a sharp leaf. We had an oak tree that was cut down and now is growing as a bush, those leaves are no joke. I am constantly cutting it back so the chickens won't poke their eyes out!

sunny_side_up, that is exactly wht i am doing, but i am still squeezing the eye "bump" but cant get anything out. i looked under the lid and cant see anything unusual. i also paid $13 for that eye ointment.

Ya'll got a deal on the ointment. I paid $16.00 from my vet. I have credit with my vet an that's a way good thing!!! I never know when an emergency will come up. I never thought to look for the stuff at the feed store but I never needed it for a chicken either. I just happened to already have some. My vet will also sell me whatever med's I need and never even see the animal. He's good to me. I think he does this because he is afraid I'll bring one of my venemous snake's in for treatment. lol It's 60 miles round trip to the vet and only 25 to the feed store. I'll have to remember this and hopefully I want need it again. I don't want to ever have to do that again. I think if the chick wasn't so little it wouldn't of been so bad. I will still be looking for an answer to what caused this. This has also changed to way I check I on my bird's. I alway's look for any that are not acting normal. This chick didn't do anything to catch my attension. Who know's I'll probably do a eye check ever couple of night's. When my old man saw the peice that came out of it's eye, he said what's that a tooth. It was that big. Good luck, let me know how it's going. PEACE

Jeffersequine.com has Terramycin opthalmic for 9.49 per tube. If you get 12 or more it's 8.99 each.

I always keep some on hand for our horses and I get the Triple Antibiotic opthalmic which is much cheaper from our vet. It's usually about 5.95 per tube.

Chillin in Muscadine and Sunny Side Up.....you both described the white matter which came out of the eye as rubbery. Did someone mention they might have a picture of it? The reason I ask for a picture is because tomorrow I am going to spend some time looking closer at my chickens eye. The swelling went down but it doesn't want to go completely away.

Do you think it was some kind of hardened infection or abcessed material or even "Eye Worm" larvae?

Well this was pretty gross reading, but very educational. I have never in my life seen or heard of anything like this. Hope your dear bird gets relief soon.

The pic's didn't come out to well but this will give you an idea of the size of whatever this thing was and in such a small baby. I don't think it was larvae or a worm. It had to be something that dried to have the texture it had but I can't imagine having something in the eye dried like that. You would think it would be gooey or mushy. I just don't know.

That is a dime beside the thing to show size and thickness.
