Hello BYC! My husband and I are new to chicken rearing and have had some troubles right off the bat. We recently got our first 3 hens from a local farm here in northern CA. All three hens (1 ameraucana, 1 red sex link, 1 silver laced wyandotte) are about 5-6 months old and we've only had them for a couple of weeks.

On Saturday, one of the hens (SLW) was very lethargic and weak, the left side of her face was swollen, her eye mostly closed, her nose was running (mostly clear, yellow when dried) and she had watery poop. She ate and drank, but small amounts. We didn't know what to do, so we left her alone to sleep. The next day the swelling was reduced somewhat and she was acting normal and energetic - eating, drinking, more normal poop. Her face seemed pretty normal on Thurs and her behavior is normal. However, another of our hens (EE) got a somewhat swollen face and runny nose Tuesday, although her eyes are open and she seems to have a normal energy level. The swelling has reduced today, but a long day at work prevented me from observing much behavior. The third hen may also have a runny nose, though no other symptoms. She has continued to lay eggs. Overall, they seem to be getting over it on their own, but was wondering if this is Infectious Coryza? Do I need to treat them with antibiotics to get rid of it permanently?

Other info: Though they were from the same farm, they were from a larger flock and pecking order establishment was a little too violent for us initially, so they are in the same coop but separated so they are unable to peck each other. We are giving them increasing amounts of time together in our yard with supervision to ease the transition. Only one (the RSL) has laid eggs so far. The only treatment we have given them so far is some Avia Charge in their water for electrolytes. They are eating layer crumble with oyster shells and occasional seeds (sunflower, squash). They sometimes eat grass and clover that they find in the yard. Their bedding is wood shavings (in the coop) and wood shavings/grass clippings in the run.

Thanks for your help!

Jess

Thanks for the information - Their faces did not look that bad, so hopefully it's not coryza!

Coryza will typically develop a rank smell about the face from the infection. Nasel discharge is often yellow as well as swelling of one eye and the developemnt of puss- white cottage cheesy caught under the third eye lid into the sinus, open mouth breathing, wheezing in the chest.

MG infection - Often swelling around the eye, watery nasel and eye discharge, bubbles seen in the corner of the eye, weight loss, open mouth breathing, wheezing, fast spreading often emerges after stress. Can lead to MS infection where chicken shows Marek like symptoms of lameness etc..

Most Respiratory infections are bad news. they can lay dormant for long times and spring up during times of stress and you may have never known. If you are not breeding your birds then your choices are more open as long as you understand the way these diseases transmit and make sure to take appropriate cleaning practices before you go to feed stores and other chicken related areas. Most treatments call for the use of either Tylan 50 or LA200 or if you have a good vet - Baytril. Read up on these diseases and others so you understand treatment and risks. Best Wishes.

I have something like this but two of the seven infected are rattling when breathing and coughing very hard, one of the coughing ones actually died last night. I am treating with Tylan 50 but it doesn't seem to be having much effect. I am taking a few to a poultry vet tomorrow for testing, but I'm worried I will lose my whole flock to this.

Nose running? Better go catch it.
The stuff coming out of a runny nose is mucus. Our bodies produce alot of the stuff from our lungs to our nose. Mucus is your bodys way of protecting itself from infection as germs have trouble sticking to it. The mucus runs to try and quickly get rid of an injection such as when you get a cold or have allergies. Mucus is mostly a mix of saleen, white blood cells and other particulate matter. You swallow at least a liter of it daily without even knowing or feeling it I have a trach so quite a bit of that mucus gathers up inside it instead of going down unnoticed and I have to suction the excess out with a machine But it’s that same mucus that also lubricates your throat but I choke on it if I don’t get some of that mucus out
