Swollen face, but just on one side. Infectious Bronchitis? *PICS*

your issue is definately infectious if its showing up in multiple chickens in a small flock. Insonsitent eggs? Off egg production or eggs that are wierd shaped? Have your eggs seemed watery and less 'firm' than usual?
Any nasal discharge?wierd noises from the chickens? Listen to their breathing and see any sound congested...if you have any one of those 3 symptoms on top of swollen eye and any mishaped eggs or watery eggs I'd say you have infectious bronchitis.

the thing with IB is you can't in good conscience ever sell a chicken, chick, or egg off your property. so you'll need to do what we refer to as "owning a closed flock" as long as your existing birds are alive and on your property, no bird leaves and no new birds come on it. you can still breed from your flock, but again nothing leaves.- if you can get the infection to receed and become dormant, any new bird that you bring onto your property will get the disease and become infected showing symptoms, which can then cause your 'original carriers' to show symptoms again. that would be retreating the whole flock again...

If you think you have something infectious I suggest calling your agriculture department and ask if they charge for avian testing and if so how much (alot of states do it free) - and have them test your flock for infectious diseases.

I had a bird dropped off years ago without my permission (a 'free' roo, someone dumped while i wasn't home) and it introduced IB and mareks into my huge flock of birds. I had no choice since I sold eggs and chicks and dual purpose roosters to other people, and I had neighbors who owned chickens, I was forced to cull 80% of my flock - any that showed the slightest symptom, and quarantined the rest and even purposely stressed them to get them to show symptoms after a few weeks...had them tested and everything. only then after extensive cleaning and resanitizing did I deem my birds 'healthy' to let anything leave my property.

The side of the face swelling or 'growing' a lump is often associated with a sinus infection in chickens. The antibiotics will clear it up.

Even my forehead/eye swells up when I get one. If your worried about his comfort, a warm compress can do wonders for me so I bet it would help him too if he'll sit for it.

To me that looks more like irritation then illness. With most respiratory illnesses, IB, Coryza, MG, you will get swollen sinus area, runny nose, bubbles or water eye with some discharge or puss from nares.
If all she has is a light swelling around the whole eye, no wheezing or open mouth breathing, then i would separate her, always tend to her last, and see what happens in a few days. If it swells more but not in the sinus, try giving a little Benadryl to see if that helps.

chicken, yes the OP's hen doesn't look like sinus or respitory infection. I was originally thinking maybe a bee sting or allergens have cause eye irritation - thus resulting in the swelling.

I thought I had posted a reply to the OP, but I guess it was eaten by the evil internet. lol

tad bit of benadryl would definately be in order. flush the eye 2-3 times a day. and a tad of beadryl once a day for 3 days.

No sneezing, no discharge noticed anywhere. Swelling only lasts two days then it's gone. As for eggs--I have noticed one chicken (perhaps the first one that got it) laying soft shelled eggs, but hers have always been inconsistent. There is less egg laying (3-4 a day rather than 5-6), but I understand this may be related to summertime?
It's my first summer with mature chickens. We don't sell eggs--our six hens are only for home consumption. I sure hope the eggs are still safe to consume!!!
Thanks for the tip about the agriculture dept. I will try that, but I would really appreciate any further insight!

Hi there, i have got this exact same problem with one of my chickens. did you ever find out what it was?

regards,

Chris.

I have the same problems with one of my BO hens, no coughing, no mucous, no nothing. Expect the fact that her face is swollen. I've tried warm compresses and anti bacterial cream.... she also has bumble foot, could that somehow relate to the face swelling? Also does anyone have any suggestions on how to cure bumble foot? Thanks!
