Hey y’all my buff orpington has a swollen face. It’s only on her right side though! She free ranges all day since she gets pecked on by the rest of the flock. Her back and wings are all picked on. Part of it is that we need more space in the coop and run and we are in the process of building two new coops at our new house since we will be moving. I don’t think she is swollen from a peck or anything since this morning she was fine. What could it be? A sting? Help!!! What do I do to help her? Also she has no sign of a respotory infection. She has a bit of dirt by her nares I think but no discharge or any odd sounds with breathing etc.

I might be concerned about a sting. If she were my hen, I would give Ledum Homeopathic remedy. It’s used for treating Lyme disease and helps with insect bites and stings. I would also give turmeric for anti inflammatory.
1/4 tsp turmeric sprinkled on top of her feed daily.
For Ledum, you can get it at your local health good store.
To dose, take the cap off the bottle and twist the top while holding the bottle upside down to dispense the pellets. DO NOT touch the pellets. The amino acids on your hands will render the remedy in affective.
Dispense 5 pellets into a sterile jar or dropper. Fill with water and shake the jar to dissolve the pellets. Once dissolved, I’d give 1/2tsp of the dissolved remedy in the beak using a syringe. Give a couple times a day until swelling resolves. Try to squirt the remedy around her tongue rather than down her throat. The membranes on her mouth will take the remedy straight to her brain on contact.

I’m currently in the car as we are taking a load of barn stuff to the new house we are moving into. I’ll be back after dark, but I’m concerned about putting her in the coop since she already is so picked on. Really our only option is to put her in a crate in my room locked away from the dogs, but I’m not sure that’s the smartest idea… I’m not exactly opposed it’s just chickens have a possibility of disease and well.. they are sorta gross sometimes….(digging through horse poop etc.) But if y’all think she needs to be separated and think should do it, I will in a heartbeat. I wa snot able to give her that stuff yet but I will. How much water do I add @Weeg?

I would watch and see. If she looks like she’d getting picked on, then I would just put her in the fog crate in the coop to minimize stress. They is as long as she won’t get to hot in there.

For the remedy, it doesn’t really matter how much water. I usually use a small jar for my dogs, but a dropper bottle might be nice since it will be easy to administer.

She’s looking worse! I just got back and my mom locked them in the secure coop when it was dark. It’s 11:20 pm here. I had to put her in the crate in the barn away from her sisters. She’s not happy but I don’t have much of a choice. Her whole back and wings are almost bare from picking previously. I don’t have a dropper or anything… I only have little syringes I used for my chicken before. I really need to go to bed so I can get up early but I want to give her something now. Should I put it in a jar I just boil?

Oh gosh! That’s awful! Do you have Apis Mellifica remedy? I would give that too encase she’s having a reaction. It will treat an allergic response.

Boil the jar if possible. Otherwise clean it good. Get it into her ASAP. Turmeric too. I would go 1/2 tsp.
