swollen sinus? or something stuck in her eye? *PIC added*

It still looks like in the eyelid to me. If it were an infection or cold it can move into the sinuses, right in front of eye in back of nostril. Yes you can use neosporin in the eye, even though it says not too. If their is no nasal discharge it still could be something in her eye. Does her eye have bubbles? If so that could be respiratory, and then I would dose her with Tylan. Hope you see improvement soon.

I flushed the eye, put the Neosporin in it...and she proceeds to try and scratch her eye out. She must not have liked the feel of the salve. Still no change in it, I was kind of hoping that when I squirted it something would come out, like a piece of pine shavings. It's not a hard swelling...I guess I just keep flushing and putting salve on it two or three times a day. Not sure how long to keep that up. I guess it'll either get better or worse, but it's been the same for a good 48 hours.

Sick chickens stress me out.

Thanks for your help chicken zoo!

I checked it this morning, put some more Neosporin in it...it seems to be about the same size as yesterday, but the color seems to be changing to a green color. I'm not sure if that's a piece of hay stuck in there, or if it's getting infected and pussy. There is no discharge and no bubbles. She is still wild and crazy, feeling good.

Do I need to consider opening it up and draining it?? How would I go about that?

Tony, we don't have a vet (chickens are the only animal we have). Plus, vets are way expensive.

I will cull her before taking her to a vet, because we just don't have that kind of money and she's a chicken. If there is a way to get the meds at a reasonable cost, I'll do it, but we can't afford a $65 exam fee from a vet that doesn't even DO birds.

They shouldn't charge you for a visit.Tell them it's a gamebird(very flighty) and you can't catch him. Also tell them you read up on this and this is the meds you need.It is actually Flagyl,so if you have some of that it will work.If I remember right this swollen eye is called corzyea.I may be wrong.but I think thats it.I paid 8.00 for 15 pills,so it is not expensive at all.
In N.H.,Tony.

I guess I'm questioning if this is respiratory or not. Doesn't Coryza have other symptoms like a foul smell and discharge? I don't want to dose her with meds for something she doesn't have. But I'd hate to see her suffer because of my negligence. I have no experience with this, but wouldn't she develop other symptoms if this was respiratory???

I have been treating 2 of my chickens for eye problems. It appears that my flock has been exposed to a virus which they will always be carriers for. However since I only have a few chickens and they are only for myself I have decided to treat them, not to cull them. The eye problems that went with that looked a bit like your hen's but my chickens' eye eventually closed and got very swollen. I have been treating them with terramycin ointment that I bought at the farm store. It was about $13 for a small tube and it has worked very well. The one pullet I have that looks a lot like yours did not get eye discharge until a bit later (she was the first to get it), my second pullet (a silkie) got it in both her eyes and her eyes did get a bit foamy and a little discharge.

All of my chickens sounded a bit like they had colds....kinda sneezy and I've treated all with powdered tetracycline antibiotic which you add to their water. I also got that at the farm store and it was only about $4.00. A couple of days after I separated the 2 pullets I noticed they also had VERY watery stool with small bits of dark green solid. From my research and from others help I think my flock has the virus MS (just to keep that in the back of your head if you notice similar symptoms). I hadn't noticed at first what my pullet's eye looked like, but I did notice she was sitting in the nesting box more than was normal for her, so I may have missed earlier symptoms.

Anyway, good luck, and I would recommend the terramycin ointment, it has been extremely helpful. I did not take my chickens to my vet, but I did talk to him about this. He concurred with my conclusions and these were the 2 medications he recommended. He does have pretty good experience with birds.

get some vet rx put 3 drops in her eye for 3 days on first week, second week do it 2 times and for 3rd week. mine did this I did some research everyone told me that she had coryza or crd there was no discharge anywhere she ate very good and everything. I still have her seperated. she would scratch her eye like crazy ended up she had eye worm. do a search on it it will tell you how to treat it. Mine was also on antibiotics for 23 days did not work vet RX did

Chickbator, I did a search on eye worms and that looks more like what I'm dealing with, rather than respiratory. Still no other symptoms. The swelling this morning is much less, but still there a little bit. I almost couldn't see it at first. I'm hoping the Neosporin is taking care of it, because neither our feed store or the pet store in town carries vetrx. I'll be ordering some online...Has anyone used a product called 1 Drop 1 Eye 1Time? The other post on eye worms mentioned this as a good remedy, but it is also a bit pricey at $18 plus shipping.

Does anyone know if this is transmissible to my other birds or... humans?

How do I prevent the others from getting it?

Thanks for the support and help, I would have driven my hubby batty DAYS ago without this board!

I would guess eye worm too. It doesn't look like corzya to me.
