Syrupy liquid coming out of beak

Whenever our cockerel bends over to eat a syrupy liquid comes out of his mouth and he stops. What can be the cause?
He is 1 year + and was very healthy until a couple of weeks ago. He was very handsome with big comb and wattles. Recently looking depressed, still eating and drinking a little. Very quiet and docile and not behaving like a cockerel with the chickens.
The older Rooster is being kept away from him. We thought he was improving until today when we have observed this several times.
We have no definitive identified condition but have suspected injury, loss of testosterone, and now wonder if it’s sour crop or congested crop? there is no sour smell
